Description

It was also the home ground of Stoke's predecessors, Royal Stoke Rangers FC, from 1878 to 1897. Victoria Ground, also known as The Vic, was for 119 years the home ground of Stoke City Football Club until the club moved to the Britannia Stadium in 1997. It was also the home ground of Stoke's predecessors, Royal Stoke Rangers Football Club, from 1878 to 1897. The original grandstand, which had a capacity of 10,000, was demolished in 1954 and replaced with a modern stand. In 1982 the ground underwent further redevelopment, adding an all-seater stand and increasing the capacity to 31,000. The football team moved to the Britannia Stadium in 2003.

On the 28th of Match 1878, Stoke played against Talke Rangers at the Victoria Ground. The match ended in a 0-1 victory for Stoke.

The following decades saw very few changes made to the ground; in contrast, modern concrete stadiums were constructed all over the country except for Victoria Ground, which remained nothing more than three uncovered banks and a small wooden stand.

The stadium had also been renamed the Stadium of Light after a donation from former Sunderland player Jimmy Armfield. By the end of World War One, the stadium had undergone further developments with the construction of two extra stands. Development continued in the following 20 years and by 1930, the stadium had lost its oval shape and the Boothen End was fully terraced. The Stadium of Light had also been renamed after a donation from former Sunderland player Jimmy Armfield.

In 1935, a new main stand, the Butler Street Stand, was built. This stand could seat about 5,000 fans and would be the showcase stand for the following three decades.

The record attendance for a league match was set in 1937 against Arsenal. That day, 51,380 people attended the match.

In 1963, a new main stand was built at Boothen Road Football Club. At the same time, the club celebrated its centenary with a match against the legendary Real Madrid side.

During a storm in January 1976, the roof of the Butler Street Stand was blown off. The subsequent repair works severely depleted the club's financials and indirectly led to the club's relegation in the following year.

Although Stoke bounced back a few years later, their ground saw further improvements with the construction of a new two-tier stand at Stoke End. At the same time, two out of four floodlights were replaced, giving the ground a unique look with two different sets of floodlights.

Repairs and renovations were carried out in the 1980s to improve the corporate facilities of Stoke City Football Club. However, in 1994 Stoke announced plans for a new all-seater stand that would hold 9,000 supporters, but these plans were never realized as the club opted instead to build a new stadium. A complete renovation of Victoria Ground would have been too expensive.

The final ever match at Victoria Ground took place on the 4th of May 1997 between Stoke and West Brom.

After that match several low-key matches were still played at the ground, and the final match was a pre-season friendly against Coventry City. However, only 4,000 people attended that match, the rest having already said goodbye during the West Brom match.

After Stoke moved into the Britannia Stadium, the Victoria Ground got demolished. Up to today, however, no redevelopments have taken place and the site remains empty.
