History and description

The ground's inaugural match, between Hearts and Bolton Wanderers, was watched by a crowd of around 3,000 spectators. The original Tynecastle Stadium had a capacity of 15,000 spectators. The current Tynecastle Stadium has a capacity of over 50,000. Tynecastle Stadium opened on April 10, 1886 with an evenly contested match between Hearts and Bolton Wanderers. Over 3,000 spectators were in attendance to watch the game. In 1905, the original Tynecastle Stadium was replaced with a new stadium that could seat over 50,000 fans. The current stadium has since been expanded multiple times to its current size of over 50,000 seats. The original Tynecastle stadium consisted of just one wooden stand. Over the years, however, it was expanded with two more stands, resulting in a total capacity of 10,000.

Over the next three decades, Tynecastle's capacity increased to over 61,000. New concrete stands were built and additional banking created. The highlight was the construction of the brick and steel main stand by Archibald Leitch in 1914.

On the 14th of February 1932, a record crowd of over 53,396 attended a Scottish Cup match between Hearts and Rangers.

The terraces were subsequently concreted and modernised in 1959, and a new roofed enclosure was built thereafter.

Over the following decades, attendance gradually decreased, and as a result, the stadium's capacity was reduced to 30,000.

In the 1980s, various terraces at the stadium were converted into seating areas; however, it wasn't until 1994 that redevelopment work began.

The construction of the Wheatfield Stand began in 1994, and was followed by the construction of two new stands at both ends in 1997. The project was completed in 1997.

Beginning in the early 2000s, Hearts started to consider options for either moving to a new stadium, moving to nearby Murrayfield, or reconstructing Tynecastle through the reconstruction of the main stand.

Various plans failed, but in 2016 a new main stand was proposed. Construction began during the 2016/17 season and was completed in November 2017, increasing capacity from 17,400 seats to over 20,000 seats.

Hearts Tickets

Tickets for Hearts FC matches can be bought online, by phone (+44) 333 043 1874, or in person at the Hearts Ticket Office at Tynecastle. Hearts consistently attract decent crowds and may sell out the occasional home match, though for nearly all home matches tickets will be easily available if bought in advance.

The ticket prices for the matches against Aberdeen, Celtic, Hibernian, and Rangers range from £19.00 for a seat at the lower tier behind the goal to £30.00 for the central seats at the Wheatfield Stand and new Main Stand.
