History and description

The original Stamford Bridge opened on the 28th of April 1877, but for the next 28 years it served primarily as an athletics venue. Stamford Bridge was rebuilt in 1905, and Chelsea FC moved in to take its place.

The Stamford Bridge stadium at that time consisted of one covered seating stand and a vast open bowl of terraces covering the other three sides. An estimated 100,000 people could fit into the stadium.

In 1948, an additional terrace was added to the South End. Few changes were made until 1930, when new terraces were built at the Shed End and in 1948 when an additional terrace was added to the South End.

In 1931, the club recorded its lowest attendance when only 5,394 fans attended a match against West Ham United.

In 1999, the West Stand was replaced by a new boardwalk stand. In 1965, the terraces of the West Stand were replaced with a new covered seating stand. Redevelopments continued in the mid 1970s when the old main stand was demolished and replaced by the new East Stand. In 1999, the West Stand was replaced with a new boardwalk stand.

The construction of the new East Stand at Chelsea Stadium had such an effect on the club's finances that it was almost forced into bankruptcy. The Stamford Bridge site was sold to property developers in order to pay off some debts, which almost resulted in Chelsea being evicted and forced to ground share with Fulham or QPR.

In 1992, the club regained ownership from the Roman Abramovich family and made no changes to the stadium or its operations between then and 2006, when a report on Chelsea's redevelopment was published. The Taylor report called for extensive renovations to Stamford Bridge, which were finally completed in February 2014.

Work on the new seating stand at the North end of the stadium started in 1994 and it was replaced a few years later with a new stand at the Shed End.

The reconstruction of the West Stand started in 1997 and was completed in 2001. At the same time, the East Stand underwent an extensive refurbishment.

Despite the stadium's limitations, Stamford Bridge is still a ground with a large capacity and many facilities. Chelsea have been looking to expand or build a new stadium over the past decade because of these limitations.

The current ground expansion project turned out to be too complicated due to the stadium being hemmed in by housing, so in 2012 the club explored different sites in West London for the construction of a new stadium. One such site was the location of the Battersea Power Station, but their bid for the site failed.

In 2015, Chelsea announced plans to build a new stadium on the site of their former home, Stamford Bridge. The first images of the stadium designed by Herzog & De Meuron architects were presented later that year.

The project, estimated to cost over £500 million, was approved by the local city council and major of London in early 2017. The club currently hope to move into their new home before the start of the 2021-22 season; during the works, they would have to play their home matches elsewhere. Both Wembley Stadium and Twickenham have been named as possible options.

How to get to Stamford Bridge

The Stamford Bridge Stadium is located in central London in the borough of Hammersmith and Fulham. The stadium is situated slightly less than 2 miles south-west of Hyde Park and the Harrods Store, and less than 3 miles south-west of Buckingham Palace. The nearest tube station is Fulham Broadway, which is on the District Line. This can be accessed by taking a Wimbledon-bound train from Earl's Court station, which is on the Circle and Piccadilly Line. Earl's Court station itself is also within walking distance of the stadium (20 minutes).

Alternatively, one can reach Stamford Bridge by London Underground. Both West Brompton and Imperial Wharf stations are a 15-minute walk away from the stadium.

These buses take passengers from various places in London to the stadium.

Other buses that pass by the stadium include bus 11 (from Liverpool Street Station), bus 28 (from Kensal Rise), bus 296 (from Ladbroke Grove and Clapham Junction), and bus 391 (from Richmond).

Chelsea does not recommend arriving by car on matchdays as no parking is available. Paid parking is available beneath the stadium on non-matchdays.

If arriving by car from the M25, take the M4 into the city. At Earl's Court turn right onto Earl's Court Road, and after about a mile right onto Fulham Road. After a few hundred metres, the stadium will be on your right.

Address: Stamford Bridge, Fulham Road, London, SW6 1HS

As a member who attends every home game, I can attest to the West Stand being occupied by members and season ticket holders for the most part. The heated Upper West is best for winter games but Lower West provides the best close-up and personal experience.

I go to a few matches during the season! The Bridge does lack atmosphere, but I must admit that the best stands for singing are The Shed and the Matthew Harding! The East and West stands are usually full of tourists and families. The stadium tour is great too, as you get to go in the press room, the home and away changing rooms, the tunnel, the dugouts and you even get to sit in The Shed upper tier section during the tour! I highly recommend any football fan to visit Stamford Bridge!
