History and description

Coventry Building Society Arena, formerly known as Ricoh Arena, became the home of Coventry City in 2005 after having played the previous 106 years of their existence at Highfield Road. Plans for the stadium's move were announced as early as 1997, but due to several delays the stadium opened four years later than initially planned. This also meant that the proposed capacity of 45,000 was later scaled back to just over 30,000.

On 20 August 2005, the first official match of the Coventry City versus QPR Premier League season was played. The stadium, Ricoh Arena, officially opened six months later in February 2006.

The Ricoh Arena played host to a number first round group games during the 2012 Olympic games.

Over the years, Coventry City has had a rocky relationship with the Coventry Building Society Arena, which is not club-owned. This dispute led to Coventry playing their home games of the 2013-14 season at Northampton's Sixfields Stadium, which is over 25 miles away from Coventry. However, they returned for the next season.

In 2014, the London Wasps rugby club bought the ground in Coventry. In 2019, Coventry City moved out of the building society arena because of another rent dispute. They moved back to Coventry in 2021 and played at Birmingham City's St. Andrew's Stadium for two seasons.

Coventry Building Society Arena also regularly hosts large concerts.

How to get to the Coventry Building Society Arena

The Coventry Building Society Arena is located in the northern part of Coventry, about three miles from the city center and one mile from the main railway station. The stadium is easily reached by car due to its close proximity to the M6 motorway. Exit the M6 at junction 3 Coventry/Nuneaton, and follow the A444 toward Coventry until the Romley's Green roundabout, where signs will guide you to the car parks (the stadium will be visible right in front of you).

Alternatively, there is a bus stop located just outside of the stadium, which can take passengers to the game for £2.50.

Alternatively, catch bus 4 or 5 from Pool Meadow Bus Station near the Coventry Transport Museum. The journey takes about 20 minutes.

Address: Phoenix Way, Coventry, CV6 6GE

Eat, drink, and sleep near the Coventry Building Society Arena

The Coventry Building Society Arena is located on the edge of a retail park in the city. The area is mainly residential, with a few places to eat or drink on Longford Road. The DoubleTree by Hilton at the Ricoh Arena is located within the stadium and can provide visitors with views of the pitch. The Novotel Coventry is located on the M6 highway, but may be convenient if arriving by car; otherwise, guests will need to search for hotels in Coventry's city center.

Browsing through hotels near the Coventry Building Society Arena and exploring the city centre options are both excellent choices.

Coventry City Tickets

Tickets for Coventry City matches can be bought online or at the Ticket Office at the Coventry Building Society Arena. Tickets can also be bought on the day of the match at the gate (cash) or at the ticket office (cashless). Coventry don?t normally sell out.

Tickets cost either £20.00, £25.00, or £30.00 per stand depending on the match.

Useful websites

The Coventry City FC website, cbsarena.co.uk, and the Coventry Building Society Arena website, cbsarena.co.uk, are both official websites of the club. The tourist information website, visitcoventryandwarwickshire.co.uk, provides information about the Coventry and Warwickshire area. The public transport information website, nxbus.co.uk, provides information about getting around Coventry using public transport. Coventry are homeless and playing their home matches at St. Andrews in Birmingham (the home of Birmingham City Football Club), which is just stating.

Highfield Road should not have been left out of your grounds section. If you want to include it, just say so and I can help with any images and information. Just ask.

The Ricoh, like many new stadiums is just a plastic bowl with no soul.

One positive thing is that the pitch is underground. So supporters enter the stadium one third of the way up the stand.

This is good because wheelchair users have easy access and a decent view of the pitch.

Some people may believe that a good view of the pitch is not advantageous, while others may find it easier to evacuate should there be a fire.

In February 2020, Coventry are homeless and playing their home matches at St. Andrews in Birmingham (the home of Birmingham City Football Club).

Just saying.
