History and description

The stadium was originally designed to hold a maximum of 50,000 spectators, but was later modified to seat more than 70,000 spectators. The original cost of the stadium was approximately $21 million USD. Puskás Ferenc Stadion, previously known as Népstadion, was built to provide Hungary with a larger national stadium to replace the Üll?i úti Stadion. The stadium was originally designed to hold a maximum of 50,000 spectators but it later received modifications to seat more than 70,000 spectators. The original cost of the stadium was approximately $21 million USD. The stadium was inaugurated on October 16, 1952. Plans initially involved a 70,000-seat stadium, but this was later expanded to 100,000 seats. Construction got approved in 1948 and works finished five years later. The stadium was inaugurated on October 16, 1952.

The stadium was originally named "Népstadion" after the café in Pest located near its original site. The first official match was between Honvéd and Spartak Moscow on 20 August 1953.

A year after the stadium's record attendance of 104,000 people, it recorded its second-largest crowd when 82,500 people attended an international between Hungary and Austria.

Few changes were made to the stadium until it became an all-seater in the 1990s. Capacity was further reduced due to safety measures.

In 2002, the stadium was renamed in honour of legendary Hungarian football player Ferenc Púskas.

In the mid 2000s, plans were made to rebuild Puskas Ferenc Stadion and this became part of Hungary's bid to host the European Championships in 2012. While the bid failed, the Hungarian government continued to work on plans to build a new modern stadium, which became concrete in 2014 when Budapest was selected as one of the host cities for the Euro 2020 Championships.

The demolition of the stadium started in 2016 and the new Puskas Arena opened in 2019.

Despite the general public-wide ban on smoking in public places, it is apparent that Hungary does not agree. Shame on those in charge of the stadium for allowing smoking inside; it would have been so much easier to have hired janitors before the event took place. I hope that DM's tour organizers will be more aware of the facilities they choose for their concerts next time around. While the rest of the world has accepted a ban on smoking in public places, Hungary seems to think that it knows better. Shame on you, people in charge of the stadium! Is it that hard to find cleaning staff before a big event like this? I wish DM's tour organisers had known about the facilities they were using beforehand.
