History and description

The Petrovsky Stadium opened on July 26th, 1925. The first football match played there two weeks later was between a team from St. Petersburg (Leningrad) and a team from Kharkiv (5-1). As Vladimir Lenin had died one year earlier, the stadium was named V. Lenin Stadium in his honour. The initial stadium capacity was 10,000, but it was later increased to 25,000 in 1933.

In the Second World War, the stadium got heavily damaged as the reserve pitch was used for anti-aircraft artillery. It took until 1957 for the stadium to be reconstructed as the city was most of all focusing on building the massive Kirov Stadium.

At the Lenin Stadium, which had been rebuilt after a fire destroyed it in 1992, few football matches were played as Zenit played its home matches at the Kirov Stadium.

The stadium underwent a recent renovation in the late 1970s to make it ready for the 1980 Olympic games, during which it hosted several matches of the football tournament and served as a training base.

The Petrovsky Stadium in 1992 got renamed to reflect its new owners, Zenit, and simultaneously underwent a refurbishment which reduced its capacity to the present total. The stadium has been the permanent home of Zenit ever since.

The Petrovsky Stadium was still far from a modern arena, and in late 2008, Zenit started the construction of the new Saint Petersburg Stadium at the site of the former Kirov. Due to various delays, an initial completion date of 2009 was pushed back several times, and the new stadium only got completed in April 2017.

How to get to Petrovsky Stadium

Petrovsky Stadium is located close to Saint-Petersburg's city centre. It lies slightly more than 2 kilometres north-west from the Hermitage, but further from Saint-Petersburg's train stations south of the centre (about 6 kilometres). Walk from the Hermitage and Palace Square to the stadium in 30 minutes. Cross the bridge over the Neva river opposite Palace Square onto Vasilevsky Island, and 200 metres later leave the Island again via the next bridge over the second branch of the river. Keep left parallel to the river and after a few hundred metres you will see the stadium in front of you.

Sportivnaya is a stop on line 5 which is located right next to the stadium. Line 5 can be accessed from the southern edge of the city centre at Sadovaya station or at Zvenigorodskaya metro station.

Line 40 connects the stadium with Sennaya Ploshchad.
