Stade du Pays de Charleroi: How to get there and how to buy tickets (2022)

Construction of the stadium was delayed because of WWII and it wasn't until 1956 that it was finally completed. The Stade du Pays de Charleroi was first used for football in 1923, but construction of the stadium was delayed because of World War II. It wasn't until 1956 that the stadium was finally completed.

History and description

The stadium was used as a venue for the 1938 World Cup, and became the home of S.L. Benfica in 1953. It underwent extensive renovation in 2007, which was completed ahead of schedule. The site of Stade du Pays de Charleroi has been used for football since 1923, however it wasn't until 1939 that an actual stadium was built. The stadium was used as a venue for the 1938 World Cup and became the home of SL Benfica in 1953. In 2007, extensive renovation work was undertaken on the stadium and it was completed ahead of schedule. The stadium was originally built with a capacity of 32,000, but due to World War II it was dramatically reduced to just 12,000 seats. On the 27th of May 1990, the maximum capacity was restored and the stadium became officially known as Stade du Pays de Charleroi. The Stade du Pays de Charleroi opened on 5 March 1939 with a match between Charleroi and US Centre (2-1). The stadium originally had a capacity of 32,000, but due to World War II it was reduced to just 12,000 seats. On 27 May 1990 the maximum capacity was restored and the stadium became officially known as Stade du Pays de Charleroi.

For most of the next decades, Stade Mambourg consisted of one small seater stand, one covered terrace at the opposite side, and terraces in the corners short ends.

In the 1980s, a new main stand replaced the original one that covered the entire length of the pitch. Two new covered terraces were built at both short ends; these terraces were later fitted with seats.

The Stade Mambourg remained a modest ground until it was selected as one of the playing venues for Euro 2000. A major redevelopment program saw capacity increased to 30,000 seats. Works included the construction of a second tier on three of the four stands, and a steep third tier on Tribune III. After the reopening of the stadium in May 1999, its name was changed to Stade du Pays de Charleroi.

The European Championships took place at Stade du Pays de Charleroi in Belgium, and the third tier on Tribune III was removed again after the tournament. This reduced capacity to 25,000 seats.

Over a decade later, in 2012, planning permission was not obtained for the expansion of the stadium by the city of Charleroi, and they were ordered to tear down the upper tiers of the stadium. This resulted in a capacity reduction to 15,000 seats.

Recently, Charleroi have been working on plans to build a new stadium in the suburb of Marchienne-au-Pont. The preliminary plans suggest that the stadium will have a capacity of about 20,000 people, and it is hoped that it will be completed in 2024.

The official website of Sporting de Charleroi is sportingcharleroi.be. This website provides tourist information for the city of Charleroi, including information on train times and fares. The main stand for the Ultras is Tribune 3, which we will definitely try one day. Probably when I am fully fit and able to stand for that amount of time, the atmosphere outside was in now intimidating and we were welcomed by the locals when we sampled the local brew in a bar next to the ground.Inside the ground, the bars were open and sold alcohol that you were able to take to your seats right up until the final whistle.A 2-1 victory for Charleroi obviously put the locals in a good mood and even made for the players doing a lap of honour after the final whistle.A highly recommended ground, cheap, with an atmosphere and it certainly ticked all of my boxes - I would say that I don't expect tickets to be available for all games on the day. Certainly, upcoming games against Anderlecht and Standard Liege you would be best advised to buy tickets prior to the day of game if possible.

I recently moved to the area and thought I would try out this stadium that was last visited by England many years ago.

We arrived at the game without tickets, both teams fighting for a place in the playoffs. This game was very important to both teams.

We easily parked in what I assume are side streets used by all fans and quickly found our way to the stadium noticing that a whole host of bars and cafes were open for all to visit.

We found the ticket office easily and purchased tickets for $21 located in Tribune 4 which is a side stand and we were located next to the Ultra wannabes. The main stand for the Ultras is Tribune 3 which we will definitely try one day, probably when I am fully fit and able to stand for that amount of time.

The atmosphere outside was very intimidating and we were welcomed by the locals when we sampled the local brew in a bar next to the ground.

After that you were not allowed to drink and had to leave the stadium. During the game, the bars kept selling alcohol until the final whistle. After that, people were no longer allowed to drink and had to leave the stadium.

The victory by Charleroi obviously put the locals in a good mood and even made for the players doing a lap of honour after the final whistle.

A highly recommended ground, which is cheap, with an atmosphere that I found to be great and it certainly met all of my expectations.

I do not expect tickets to be available for all games on the day. As you can see from the upcoming games against Anderlecht and Standard Liege, you will be best advised to buy tickets prior to the day of the game if possible.

The locals were very friendly to Charleroi supporters and the atmosphere was wonderful. They probably don't do this every time, but there were fireworks on the roof and a rain cover over part of the stadium. It was awesome!.

I believe that the people who come to this old ground lack a soul. It is a disreputable location with plenty of charisma, and I enjoyed it immensely.

As the top tiers have been eliminated, the playing field is now open. There is a good atmosphere here, but I'm not particularly fond of new grounds. I tend to think they lack soul. This is a shabby old ground with a lot of character and I loved it.
