Description

The stadium underwent a €10 million renovation in 2014 which was funded by the city of Groningen and the NFLUK. The Stadion Oosterpark was home to FC Groningen until 2006, when the club moved to Stadion Euroborg. The stadium underwent a €10 million renovation in 2014, which was funded by the city of Groningen and the NFLUK. In 1934, the first official stand was erected and the site was renamed to Soccer Park Oosterpark. In 1935, the first floodlights were installed at the stadium. The first sports played at Oosterpark Stadium was in 1933. However, at that time there were only three pitches for field hockey and one football pitch. The football pitch did not have any stands, nor its own changing facilities. In 1934, the first official stand was erected and the stadium was renamed as Soccer Park Oosterpark. In 1935, the first floodlights were installed at Soccer Park Oosterpark.

This was changed in 1935 when a modest stand with about 500 seats was built. A few years later, earth banks were laid around the pitch so that more people could witness the games.

This allowed the stadium to accommodate a total of approximately 24,000 spectators. After this resolution in 1948, the stadium quickly expanded with three concrete terraces. A few years later, a new covered seating stand was constructed. This allowed the stadium to accommodate a total of approximately 24,000 spectators.

In 1966 the stadium became officially known as the Philips Stadion. In the 1950s various clubs from the city of Groningen made use of the stadium, most notably the Oosterparkers and GVAV, and with their successes more money became available to improve the stadium and increase its capacity. In 1966, officially known as Philips Stadion, it became one of the best stadiums in Europe.

The stadium got its current shape in the 1960s with the construction of two covered seating stands behind each goal, which brought the capacity to about 18,000.

This development coincided with the club's first foray into Europe, which ended unsuccessfully in the third round of the UEFA Cup. Another Dutch title was achieved in 1991, and a third successive European campaign followed in 1993. However, Groningen could not replicate their domestic success in Europe. In 1971, FC Groningen merged with other clubs from the city to form the new club. The club then became the regular occupant of the Oosterpark and made few changes until in the mid 1980s a new south stand was built. This development coincided with FC Groningen's first foray into European competition, which ended unsuccessfully in the third round of UEFA Cup. Another Dutch title was achieved in 1991, and a third successive European campaign followed in 1993. However, despite successful domestic performances, FC Groningen could not replicate their European success and were relegated from Dutch top flight football after one season in 1994-95

By the end of the 1980s, the official capacity was 22,000 but this was never met due to security requirements. The official record attendance was therefore set at 19,500, achieved during a UEFA Cup match against Swiss side Servette in 1988.

In the late 1980s, a new main stand was built at the stadium. Still, the old stadium barely met basic requirements and, when in the 1990s many Dutch clubs started building new stadiums, the club felt the need to move as well.

Plans were made for a new stadium in the south of the city. As the club did not feel like investing much in the old stadium, the standing sections were closed instead of converted into seats (which was a requirement of the Dutch FA). Wooden puppets were put in the standing sections to make it look less empty.

However, when the club got promoted again to the Dutch Eredivisie in 2001 and the realization of the new stadium suffered various delays, seats were installed anyway which brought capacity down to 12,500 seats.

FC Groningen played its last match at the Oosterpark on December 22, 2005. The cup match against Volendam ended in a 3-0 win for the home side. One month later, on January 21, 2006, the club moved into the new Stadion Euroborg. The Oosterpark was subsequently demolished and replaced by housing.
