History and description

The Stadio Olimpico was built in order to serve as the centerpiece of the Foro Italia sports complex, a project initiated by the fascist regime of Mussolini. The completed second tier was inaugurated on 15 May 1952. Construction of the first tier of the building had begun in 1928 and it was finished in 1932. Work on the second tier was halted due to World War II, but resumed in December 1950. The completed second tier was inaugurated on 15 May 1952.

The Stadio Olimpico officially opened on the 17th of May 1953 with a match between the Italian and Hungarian national teams. At that time, the stadium had a capacity of 100,000 people, which was mostly made up of terraces.

The Stadium of Olympia, which served as the centerpiece stadium for the 1960 Olympics, had a capacity of 53,000 seats. During the Games, it hosted the opening and closing ceremonies, as well as the athletics competitions.

Eight years later, the Stadio Olimpico served as the principal venue of the Euro 1968 Championships. During this event, it hosted the match for third place and the final between Italy and Yugoslavia (2-0 after a replay).

The Stadio Olimpico remained largely unchanged until it again was the playing venue of a European Championships, this time hosting three group matches and the final between West-Germany and Belgium.

In those years, the stadium hosted two European Cup finals: the first in 1977 between Liverpool and Borussia Mönchengladbach (3-1) and the second in 1984 between again Liverpool and AS Roma (1-1).

The renovation took a total of four years to complete and cost over $100 million. Following Italy's victory in the 1990 World Cup, it was clear that the stadium needed renovation. Initial plans only aimed to refurbish the stadium, but over time this changed as additional redesigns were made. The stands were now much closer to the pitch and it had been equipped with a roof which resulted in an increased capacity of 74,000 seats. The renovation took four years to complete and cost more than $100 million.

During the World Cup, Stadio Olimpico hosted all three of Italy's group matches, Italy's round of 16 match and quarter-final, as well as the final between Germany and Argentina.

In later years, the stadium hosted two more Champions League finals: the first in 1996 between Juventus and Ajax (1-1) and the second in 2009 between Barcelona and Manchester United (2-0).

The Stadio Olimpico underwent a last refurbishment in 2007 in order to keep it eligible to host future Champions League finals. This included, among others, the replacement of all seats.

AS Roma has also voiced displeasure with their home ground and has discussed moving, but no firm decisions have been made yet. Both AS Roma and Lazio express unease at playing in the much too large and aged CONI-owned stadium. In the mid 2000s, Lazio had plans to move to a new stadium, but these came to nothing. AS Roma also voice discontent with their home ground and have discussed moving but no firm decisions have been made yet.

AS Roma are currently in the process of planning and building a new stadium, Stadio della Roma, which will have a capacity of 52,500 seats. They hope to have completed the project by 2021. However, recent setbacks may delay the completion date.

How to get to Stadio Olimpico

The Stadio Olimpico is located north of Rome within the Foro Italico sports complex. It is situated within the river Tiber on one side and a nature reserve on the other. To get to the stadium by car, first drive to the Rome ringroad (G.R.A.), and then take exit N5 towards Flaminia (on the northern side of the G.R.A.). From there follow the signs to Foro Italico.

From there, it is a short walk to the stadium.

Alternatively, one can take bus 32 just north of Vatican City at metro stop Ottaviano. Take the bus in the direction of Tor di Quinto stop and get off at Stadio Tennis.

From here, take the metro in the direction of Colli Albani and get off at stop Piazza Nazionale. From there, you can walk to the church. Bus 280 can additionally be caught from Castel Sant'Angelo or Metro Lepanto. Take the bus in the direction of Mancini and get off at stop Stadio Tennis. From here, take the metro in the direction of Colli Albani and get off at stop Piazza Nazionale. From there, you can walk to the church.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Stadio Olimpico

The stadium itself is functional with a capacity of around 100,000. The Stadio Olimpico is located in a pleasant area along the Tiber River. It is part of the Foro Italico sports complex, which was built by the Italian fascist regime. This means that there are a few architecturally interesting structures within the sports complex, including the stadium itself. The stadium has a capacity of around 100,000 people and is functioning as intended. Unfortunately, Stadio Olimpico does not have any stadium tours which means that on non-matchdays only people can see the stadium from the outside and walk around the complex. Rome's other major stadium, Stadio Flaminio, is located walking distance on the other side of the river.

There are few food and drink options available at the Foro Italico complex itself, but the area on the other side of the river offers a typical Italian urban neighbourhood with plenty of cafes and restaurants. Of course, the options pale in comparison with Rome's city centre, and the area furthermore lacks proper nightlife.

If you want to stay close to Stadio Olimpico, there are quite a few hotels around. It almost always takes at least 10 to 20 minutes to walk to the stadium.

The hotels around Stadio Flaminio include Hotel Villa Glori, Best Western Hotel Astrid, Suites Piazza del Popolo, and Face to Face House. They get good reviews, charge between ?75 and ?125 for a double room, and have the added advantage that the tram to Piazza del Popolo passes right by.

Hotels south of the stadium include Hotel Clodio, and a few bed and breakfasts. The options north-east of the stadium include Hotel Farnesina, and the more luxurious River Chateau Hotel. For all hotels near Stadio Olimpico please click here.

If you wish to stay close to the center, but want your hotel to strategically located near Stadio Olimpico, then staying close to Piazza del Popolo or near metro stop Ottaviano (generally cheaper) are good options.

AS Roma Tickets

Tickets for AS Roma matches can be bought online, by phone, in person at one of the AS Roma stores, or at the Foro Italico Ticket Office near Stadio Olimpico. On the day of the match, tickets can be bought from the Foro Italico Ticket Office up until kickoff (at AS Roma's stores up until a few hours before kickoff). AS Roma rarely sells out for high-profile matches and even for these, tickets are generally easily available if bought in advance.

AS Roma offer tickets for two different pricing categories: B matches, which are the cheapest and range from $25.00 to $65.00, and A matches, which are more expensive and cost between $35.00 and $80.00.

You can find a seating plan here.

Lazio Tickets

Tickets for SS Lazio matches can be bought online, by phone, in person at one of the Lazio Style 1900 stores, or at one of the Listicket sales points. The store on Via Guglielmo Calderini 66/C is located closest to the Stadio Olimpico and is open on the day of the match (no ticket sales at the stadium). There are no stores in Rome's city center. Just like Roma, Lazio often sell out their matches.

Tickets prices typically range from ?20.00 for a seat behind the goal to ?80.00 for a seat at the main stand. Tickets prices can be somewhat higher for a few high-profile games.

You can find a stadium map here. For more information, email [email protected] or call +39 0 6 3237333.

Stadium tours

There are currently no possibilities for stadium tours at Stadio Olimpico.

The public transport information website at Rome is Atac.roma.it They should take a tour of Twickenham on match day and duplicate what Twickenham provides - without any problems or trouble whatsoever. If possible, I would appreciate a response - preferably advising that these improvements will be made!

I request that they take a tour of Twickenham on match day and replicate the conditions that are present at Twickenham - without any issues or trouble whatsoever. If possible, I would appreciate a response advising that this will be done.

There is a ticket facility within the stadium complex, but they did not sell the cheapest tickets in the Curva. The atmosphere was good considering the ground was only 1/3 full. There are a few bars / refreshment stands on the river bank as you approach the ground, but not much else around that we could see.

I went to the Lazio vs Sassuolo game and bought tickets from the Lazio shop about 10-12 minutes from the stadium. There was a bit of a queue so don't leave it too late. There is also a ticket facility within the stadium complex but they did not sell the cheapest tickets in the Curva.

The atmosphere at the ground was good considering that only a third of the stadium was full. There were bars and refreshment stands on the river bank as you approached the ground, but there wasn't much else around.

The stadium is old and still in very nice condition. The fans are crazy and can be very noisy. I went to watch a Roma- Manchester City game last December and I had to use an id or passport to get in.
