History and description

The stadium is located in the eastern suburb of Ekali, just outside the city center. The Olympic Athletic Center of Athens (OAKA) Stadium was built between 1980 and 1982, and opened on 8 September 1982 with the European Athletics Championships. It is located in the eastern suburb of Ekali, just outside the city center. The stadium was named after Spiros Louis, the Greek runner who won the first Olympic Marathon in 1896.

One year later, in 1983, Hamburger SV hosted the European Cup final against Juventus at OAKA Stadium (1-0). In 1987, the stadium hosted the Cup Winners' Cup final between Ajax and Lokomotiv Leipzig (1-0).

In 1984, Panathinaikos moved into the abandoned OAKA stadium after their previous home had fallen into disrepair. AEK used the stadium between 1985 and 1987, but then decided to move back to their Nea Filadelfeia stadium.

In 1994, the OAKA Stadium hosted its second European Cup final, this time contested between AC Milan and Barcelona. Barcelona achieved a 4-0 victory over their Italian foes.

In 2000, Panathinaikos moved to the upgraded Leoforos stadium. Shortly thereafter, work began to redevelop OAKA Stadium for the 2004 Olympics. Its most striking new feature was the roof designed by Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava.

In 2007, the Champions League final occurred between AC Milan and Liverpool at OAKA Stadium. The match ended in a 2-1 victory for Liverpool.

After the Olympics, both AEK and Panathinaikos moved back into their stadiums as their own stadiums had again fallen into disrepair and failed to meet safety requirements.

Both clubs made plans to build new stadiums, but these plans stalled due to a lack of funding. Panathinaikos did not manage to get a new stadium project off the ground, but in 2014 they managed to patch up their Apostolos Nikolaidis Stadium sufficiently to move back in. The move only lasted five years though as in 2018 they moved back to OAKA.

AEK finally received approval for a new stadium in 2018 and is currently working on their new home, Agia Sofia Stadium, with an expected completion date of 2021.

How to get to OAKA Stadium

The Olympic complex, including OAKA Stadium, is located in the north of Athens. It is about 9 kilometers from the city center. The Olympic stadium can be reached by metro. Stations Irini and Neratziotissa on line M1 lie within close distance of the complex. Line M1 runs straight through Athens city centre.

Eat, drink, and sleep near OAKA Stadium

Finally, to the west of the complex is Plaka, a popular tourist destination with plenty of restaurants, bars and nightclubs. You might find a café or restaurant in the adjacent neighborhoods, but otherwise you should focus on the city centre for eating and drinking. The city centre is also where most of Athens' nightlife is, although some of it moves to the southern beaches (e.g. Glifada) for the summer.

If you wish to stay close to the stadium, there are a few hotels around. The Civitel Olympic and Athens Habitat are located near the Golden Hall, but they are not cheap. The Olympic Hotel is located slightly further away, but it is somewhat more affordable. The Civitel Attik is another option. It is located north of the stadium near The Mall.

All hotels near OAKA Stadium are listed here. If you plan to stay in Athens more than just a short while, it is likely more cost effective to stay in the city centre. The options are listed below, which are generally much cheaper than staying near the stadium.
