History and description

The National Stadium of Chile, officially called Estadio Nacional Julio Martínez Prádanos, officially opened on 3 December 1938 with a friendly match between Colo Colo and Brazilian side Sao Christovao (6-2). In 1955, a stampede at a stadium in Santiago, Chile caused 9 deaths.

The stadium, known as Estadio Nacional at the time, underwent a major renovation in the early 1960s in preparation for the 1962 World Cup.

Few alterations were made to the stadium in the following decade, until it underwent a major renovation in 2009. This overhaul included the replacement of all seats and enhanced various facilities.

Initially, it was also planned to have a roof installed, but this was postponed after an earthquake struck the country early 2010. The remodelled stadium officially reopened in September 2010.

The Estadio Nacional de Chile is owned by the municipality of Nunoa, and it is used for most home matches of the Chilean national team.

The stadium is also occasionally used by Club Universidad de Chile for most of their home matches, though the club has the intention to build a new club-owned stadium in the upcoming years.

How to get to Estadio Nacional

The Estadio Nacional is located in Ñuñoa, about 5 kilometers south-east of Santiago's historic centre (Centro). The stadium lies about 4 kilometers south of Santiago's well-off Providencia area. The walk from the red L1 metro stop Baquedano is about 15 minutes.

From Providencia it will indeed be quicker to catch a bus to the stadium. Line 103, 114, 117 and 515 will take you from metro station Pedro de Valdivia (or metro Manuel Montt) directly to the stadium (stop Estadio Nacional).

You can catch bus 510 from Metro Station Los Heroes in the center or, even better, Line 508 which crosses right through the city center over Merced. Bus 515 can be caught from Metro Bellas Artes. All buses pass directly by the stadium.

Address: Avenida Grecia 2001, Ñuñoa, Santiago

Eat, drink, and sleep near Estadio Nacional

The Estadio Nacional is located in a residential neighbourhood with limited entertainment options. While there are a few local bars and restaurants, dining and drinking can be better done in the surrounding areas of Santiago or Providencia. There is no clear choice when it comes to finding a place to sleep, with both Casa Muriel and Hostel Friendly just a short walk away. For more information on hotels near Estadio Nacional, please click here.

If you have more time to spare, it might be a better idea to find a hotel in the centre or Providencia.

Universidad de Chile Tickets

Tickets for Universidad de Chile games can be bought online through Puntoticket or in person at any of the Puntotickets sales outlets. These sales outlets include the Cinemark cinemas and Ripley stores. Depending on the match, tickets may be available to purchase on the day at Estadio Nacional or they may not be.

Prices for tickets may vary somewhat depending on the occasion, but are typically between CH$ 6,000 and CH$ 35,000. Prices will go up for high-profile matches.

Since the Chilean national football team does not own Estadio Nacional, they may at times play a home match at a different stadium when Estadio Nacional is occupied or for other reasons.

It is astonishing that despite the 1973 coup and the subsequent dictatorship, there is no information on the use of the Estadio Nacional as a concentration camp.
