History and description

The stadium was built on land that had once been used as a slaughterhouse. The Estadio Monumental David Arellano was built in the late 1950s by Club Colo-Colo and was constructed on land that had once been used as a slaughterhouse. The stadium was purpose-built for football and hosted its first match in 1959. The president aimed to have a stadium with 120,000 places that would be one of the playing venues of the 1962 World Cup. The club bought a site in the south of the city and building works began in 1957.

The Chilean government decided to only play the World Cup in stadiums that had been completed before the earthquake. The other grounds got left unfinished.

The club had difficulty finding the funds to continue construction of the stadium for 15 years. The stadium officially opened on April 20, 1975 with a match between Colo-Colo and Aviación.

Although the stadium was newly built, it lacked many necessary facilities and quickly proved unsuitable for use. After only 5 matches at the Monumental Stadium, Colo-Colo returned to National Stadium.

The club strove to complete the stadium, but only after it had sold player Rubio to Bologna 24 years later. After that, sufficient funds were available to complete the stadium.

The Estadio Monumental reopened on 30 September 1989 with a friendly against Peñarol.

The stadium recorded its highest attendance of 69,305 people in 1992 during the derby with Universidad de Chile.

In the following years, capacity gradually decreased due to safety measures and the installation of proper seats in 2006.

The stadium had a maximum capacity of over 100,000 people and was used for the Group Stage matches as well as the semi-finals and final matches. The stadium is located in the city of Santiago and was inaugurated on July 3rd, 2015.
