History and description

The Maracanã stadium was built to serve as the centerpiece of the 1950 World Cup. It was supposed to be the biggest football stadium in the world. Construction on the Maracanã Stadium began in August 1948 and was completed almost two years later. The stadium officially opened its doors to the public on June 16, 1950 with a friendly match between a selection of players from Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo.

Eight days later, Maracanã hosted the opening match of the 1950 World Cup between Brazil and Mexico. It would go on to host four more matches in the first round group stage and a further three in the second round stage, including the deciding final match between Uruguay and Brazil.

In 1966, the stadium was renamed in honor of Brazilian journalist Mário Filho. However, many people continue to refer to the stadium as Maracanã.

The Maracanã Stadium hardly changed until the 1990s, when a deathly accident and resulting safety measures greatly reduced its capacity. Shortly later, it got converted into an all-seater.

Brazil was awarded the 2014 World Cup in 2007 and it was clear that Maracanã would need a massive redevelopment in order to host the final.

Building work on the stadium started in 2010 and involved the complete rebuilding of the bottom tier and the installation of a new roof with a capacity of 79,000 seats. The stadium reopened on 2 June 2013 with a friendly international between Brazil and England (2-2).

During the 2014 World Cup, Maracana hosted seven matches including the quarter-final between Germany and France (1-0) and the final between Germany and Argentina (1-0). It also hosted several matches and the final of the 2013 Confederations Cup, as well as multiple matches and the finals of the 2016 Olympic Football tournaments.

The Maracanã stadium is owned by the state of Rio de Janeiro, but it has grown to become the regular home of Flamengo and Fluminense. Other Rio clubs such as Botafogo and Vasco da Gama also occasionally use the stadium for high-profile matches.

How to get to Maracana

Maracanã is located in the east of Rio de Janeiro, about 5 kilometers from downtown Rio. It is about 12 kilometers north of the Copacabana and Ipanema beach areas. Trains from São Francisco and Belém also stop at the station. The stadium can be easily accessed by metro and train. The metro stop for Maracanã is located downtown Rio or in the Flamengo and Botafogo areas. It can also be reached by transferring from line 1, which runs from the Copacabana and Ipanema areas. Trains from São Francisco and Belém also stop at the station.

If you are at the Central do Brasil railway station, taking a commuter train is an alternative route to get to your destination. Otherwise, getting off the metro at this station and getting on a train would be best for you.

If opting to take a train, please take one on the red Ramal Deodoro line and get off at station Maracanã.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Maracana

The Maracanã Stadium is located in a residential area and there is little of interest around it. Thus, it is not one of Rio's better areas and there is therefore little reason to head to the stadium long before the match. Eating and drinking are better done in Rio's more touristy areas. There are a few affordable hotels close to the stadium, such as the Gallant Hotel or Hotel Villa Tijuca, but if you have a little more money to spare you'll take more out of your stay if you choose one of the many hotels closer to the beaches in the tourist areas. The stadium is easily reached by metro.

Hotels near Maracanã in Rio de Janeiro offer a wide range of options for visitors looking for a comfortable and convenient stay.

Tickets for Flamengo matches can be bought online, at the ticket windows of Maracanã, at the club facilities at Avenida Borges de Medeiros 997 in the Lagoa - Ipanema area, or any of the other sales outlets. The official websites for CR Flamengo, Fluminense FC, and Rio de Janeiro's Metrorio are all flamedogle.com.br, flavinense.com.br, and metrorio.com.br, respectively. These websites provide information on the history, teams, and attractions of each organization. The day before I went to watch Flamengo at Ilha do Urubu Stadium and paid three times more for the ticket. Maracana is well worth visiting.

It is a beautiful stadium. Seats are very comfortable and fans are noisy and sing and dance all game. Metro stops outside the stadium. The day before I went to watch Flamengo at Ilha do Urubu Stadium and paid 3 times more for the ticket, Maracana is well worth visit. It is a beautiful stadium.
