The stadium initially seated 4,000 people and underwent a major renovation in 1993, which increased the seating capacity to 10,500. In 2001, Stevenage Borough Council announced that the stadium would be sold to development company Excelle London Ltd., and redevelopment plans were subsequently announced which would see the capacity of the stadium increased to 15,000. The project was eventually cancelled due to disagreements between Excelle London Ltd. and Stevenage Borough Council. The Lamex Stadium was built in 1961 and originally served as the home of Stevenage Town and their successor, Stevenage Athletic. The stadium underwent a major renovation in 1993 which increased its seating capacity to 10,500 people.
