History and description

The stadium has a capacity of 54,000 fans and is located in Rotterdam. Feyenoord has played there since 1935. The stadium underwent renovations in 2015 to improve the fan experience. The Stadion Feijenoord, officially called the De Kuip, was built in the 1930s by Feyenoord to provide them with a world-class stadium. The stadium has a capacity of 54,000 fans and is located in Rotterdam. Feyenoord has played there since 1935. In 2015, the Stadion Feijenoord underwent renovations to improve the fan experience. Club president Van Zandvliet had ambitious plans to build a new 65,000-seat stadium for the club. In light of this, he looked to inspiration from other clubs with similarly sized stadiums.

Many people doubted the viability of his plans, but the Rotterdam city council voted in favor and two architects were sent on a study trip around Europe. They returned particularly inspired by the newly constructed double-decker stand at Highbury.

Construction of the De Kuip stadium in Rotterdam, Netherlands started in 1935 and was completed 10 months later. The stadium was ready in July 1936, but due to infrastructure upgrades not being done around the stadium, the Rotterdam government had to postpone the first match.

On the 27th of March 1937, the De Kuip stadium finally opened to the public with a match between Feyenoord and Belgian side Beerschot (5-2). Less than a month later, on the 12th of April, the Dutch national team played its first international at De Kuip against Belgium.

In the coming decades, De Kuip became one of the prime venues of Europe and hosted various European cup finals.

The 1963 Cup Winners' Cup final between Tottenham Hotspur and Atlético Madrid was the final of the competition. The 1968 Cup Winners' Cup final between Milan and Hamburg was the second final of the competition. The 1972 European Cup final between Ajax and Inter was the third final of the competition. The 1974 Cup Winners' Cup final between Magdeburg and Milan was the fourth and lastfinal of the competition.

The 1982 European Cup final between Aston Villa and Bayern (1-0) was hosted at DeKuip in Rotterdam, and the 1985 Cup Winners? Cup final between Everton and Rapid Wien was also hosted there. A fifth and sixth Cup Winners? Cup final were hosted in 1991 and 1997, the first between Manchester United and Barcelona, and the second between Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

In 2002, Feyenoord played Borussia Dortmund in the UEFA Cup final at De Kuip. Feyenoord won 3-2 and claimed their first European trophy.

By that time, De Kuip had undergone an extensive redevelopment. In the early 1990s, safety requirements had deteriorated to the point that it was difficult for the stadium to meet them, and works included a comprehensive refurbishment of the stands, the creation of new corporate facilities, and the installation of a roof over the previously uncovered stands.

The De Kuip Stadium was chosen to host the final of the Euro 2000 championships, receiving preference over the newer and slightly bigger Amsterdam ArenA. During the tournament, it hosted three group matches, the quarter-final between Holland and Yugoslavia (6-1), and the final between France and Italy (2-1).

Feyenoord have been deliberating whether or not to renovate De Kuip or build a new stadium. After much contemplation, they have come to the decision that it is in their best interest to build a new stadium. They will need to obtain planning permission and secure funding, but realization of this project is far from guaranteed at this point.

How to get to the De Kuip

The De Kuip stadium is located on the south bank of the Meuse, just a few hundred meters away from the river, but about 4.5 kilometers from Rotterdam's city center and more than 5.5 kilometers from the central rail station. If coming by car, the best way to reach the stadium is by taking exit 24 from the A16 motorway. Follow the Stadionweg west until reaching the stadium.

If using public transport, one can take tram 23 from Rotterdam's central rail station. After a 20-minute journey, get off at stop Stadion Feijenoord. On matchdays, one can also take tram 29.

An alternate route would be taking the train to the Lombardijen rail station, also on the south bank, and continuing on tram 2 in the direction of Charlois. After a 6-minute journey, get off at either station Beukendaal or Breeplein. The stadium is a further 10-minute walk away. Both trams run at least once every 10 minutes.

It is also possible to catch a train from Rotterdam Central Station (or Dordrecht) to the station Stadion Feijenoord, which is adjacent to the stadium on non-matchdays. There is no train service to this station on matchdays.

Address: Van Zandvlietplein 1, 3077 AA Rotterdam

Eat, drink, and sleep near De Kuip

The stadium De Kuip is located in a sports complex that includes the club's youth academy. The area across the railway tracks in Rotterdam rates among the poorest of the city. Despite the fact that Rotterdam's city centre is the best place to eat and drink, it is best to do so from Rotterdam City Centre itself. The area around Stadhuisplein is a good starting point for drinking, but Rotterdam nightlife is more dispersed across the central areas.

There are no hotels located close to De Kuip stadium. The closest hotels are in the Kop of Zuid area on the renovated and edgy south bank, which is about a half an hour away by foot. Otherwise, there are many options in Rotterdam's center.

Feyenoord Tickets

Tickets for Feyenoord matches can be bought online, in Service & Tickets booths at De Kuip, or at the box office. If tickets are still available, they can be bought at the gate from three and a half hours before the game starts. However, Feyenoord usually sells out most league games, so booking in advance is strongly recommended.

In order to buy tickets for matches that have a high risk for fan violence, Feyenoord require the possession of a Feyenoord Club Card. This card is usually required for about 7 matches per season.

Ticket prices range from $23.50 for a lower-tier seat directly behind the goal to $48.50 for a central seat at the long sides.

De Kuip stadium tours

De Kuip organizes guided stadium tours that include the players tunnel, VIP areas, and the Feyenoord Museum. The tour lasts about ninety minutes. The tours typically run from Wednesdays to Saturdays, and sometimes Mondays and Tuesdays. They take place at 10:30 am, 12:30 pm, and 2:30 pm.

To reserve a spot on a tour, it is recommended that you book as soon as possible. The tour costs $13.50.
