History and description

The Jan Breydel Stadion was built in 1974 and opened one year later in 1975. The stadium was built by the city of Bruges with the objective of providing both Bruges clubs with a shared home that could replace their separate grounds. It is named after Jan Breydel, a Belgian businessman and politician who donated money to fund its construction. The stadium was originally called the Olympiastadion and could hold an estimated 30,000 spectators, although most were seated.

The terraces of the stadium were converted into seating areas in the 1990s, reducing its capacity to under 20,000 seats. As the stadium had been selected as a playing venue for the Euro 2000 championships, it needed to be expanded to a minimum capacity of 30,000.

To qualify for subsidies from the Flanders government, a more Flemish name was required. This led to the name change to Jan Breydel Stadion, a folk hero from 14th century Bruges.

The construction of two stands at the short ends and refurbishments of the two stands at the long sides were completed in 1999.

The Jan Breydel Stadion hosted three group matches and the quarter-final between France and Spain during the Euro 2000 tournament.

They hope to move into their new home at the beginning of the 2019-20 season. If these plans go through, Cercle Brugge aim to redevelop the Jan Breydel Stadion into a smaller venue with an approximate capacity of 12,000 seats.

I was going to purchase a jersey but it was an international holiday so the shops were not open. I attended a soccer game at the stadium on a cruise ship on the day after the Club's last game of the season against Kortrijk. The shops were not open because it was an international holiday, despite that I and my dad walked around the stadium. We met some kind well spoken English girls who told us about the history and about the Club. I will start following them next year, and I recommend Brugge as a place to visit.

In the evening, we had a drink or two in town before heading down to the ground. We had a few drinks in a pub about 5 minutes from the stadium and had a chat with a few of the local fans before heading to the stadium. The atmosphere was good. Half time service at this European stadium outside was much more efficient than at most American stadiums! The game finished 0-0, but I enjoyed my visit to this stadium.

This is an absolute disgrace in 2012 and the club should be ashamed of such poor facilities. It made our trip a real let-down! Dear ladies, I would like to warn you that there is only one Ladies' lavatory in the away end of the stadium. This is extremely disappointing given that it was introduced in 2012, and the club should be ashamed of having such poor facilities. It made our trip a real let-down. Additionally, we had to walk 7 miles round trip to get to the stadium because the Belgian police insisted that Newcastle fans walk.
