History and description

In 1899, Rangers FC moved to Ibrox Stadium, which was originally built as a cricket ground. The first match played at the stadium was against Hearts on the 30th of December 1899. The original Ibrox stadium was originally oval-shaped with a track circling around the pitch. It quickly expanded to a capacity of 75,000 people within its first few months.

In 1902, an international match between Scotland and England was played at Ibrox. However, 51 minutes into the match, the wooden terraces collapsed and 26 people died. This led to the prohibition of wooden scaffold-type terraces in favour of solid earth banking.

The removal of the wooden scaffolding caused decreased capacity to 25,000 but was quickly replaced with terraces with a base of earth banking.

Ibrox underwent its next major redevelopment in 1928, with the construction of the characteristic red-brick grandstand, designed by Archibald Leitch. The stadium could at that point hold more than 80,000 fans, but was further expanded in the 1930s by increasing the banking of the terraces.

Ibrox continued to be one of the most popular sporting venues in Scotland, as evidenced by its capacity of over 60,000 for football matches. The Ibrox stadium achieved a record attendance of 118,567 in 1939 when it hosted the Old Firm match against Celtic. Following this incredible performance, few changes were made to the stadium over the following decades. The Ibrox stadium continues to be one of the most popular sporting venues in Scotland, regularly hosting football matches with a capacity of over 60,000 spectators.

The 1971 stadium disaster again occurred at Ibrox, this time resulting in the death of 66 people. This event led to the gradual conversion of Ibrox into an all-seater stadium, with benches placed in the North Stand beginning in that year.

Construction of new stands at the ground continued in the 1980s. The first was the new Copland Road Stand, which opened in 1978, followed by a new West Stand in 1979 and a new Govan Stand in 1981. The original Main Stand was the only one left standing.

Between 1990 and 1997, Ibrox Stadium received a series of smaller extensions and a refurbishment of the main stand. The works were capped with the installation of two Jumbotron screens in the two remaining empty corners.

How to get to Ibrox Stadium

Ibrox Stadium is located slightly south-west of Glasgow's city centre on the south bank of the river Clyde at about 2.5 miles from the central rail station and city centre. The stadium is close to the M8 motorway junction 23 or 24. Exit either at junction 23 or 24, and turn north. After a few hundred metres turn right at the roundabout. The stadium will be on your left hand side.

If travelling by public transport, Ibrox can be reached by the Glasgow subway system. The circular Glasgow subway system links Ibrox with the city centre. Board the metro at the central station, e.g. at Buchanan Street or St Enoch, and get off at station Ibrox. The journey is slightly quicker via the Outer Circle, taking 10 to 15 minutes.

Address: 150 Edmiston Drive, Glasgow

Eat, drink, and sleep near Ibrox Stadium

Ibrox Stadium is located in a quiet, residential area that is a mix of light industry and offices. There are a few pubs and restaurants, mainly on Paisley Road West near the center, but the options obviously pale in comparison with the city center. Sauchiehall Street and Bath Street are well-known areas for pubs and bars, and the Merchant City area is likewise packed with eateries ideal for a quick snack or satisfying meal. The St. Enoch subway stop is conveniently located near both areas.

The Campanile Hotel and Hilton Garden Inn are located on the other side of the river Clyde, but they are still just a short walk away. The Sherbrooke Castle Hotel is for those with a very large budget, located on the other side of the M77.

The list of hotels near Ibrox Stadium includes transportation connections that make staying there easy.

The official website of Rangers FC, Glasgow guide, and public transport information website are all located at Rangers.co.uk. A. In 2013, I went to watch Rangers play Queens Park in Glasgow. The stadium was great and the fans were very vocal. I got my tickets online a few weeks in advance and took a bus from the airport to the ground and then a taxi back. The atmosphere was great and I'll never forget watching Rangers play live.

S.S.S! I attended a Rangers versus Queens Park match in 2013. The stadium was great and the fans were very vocal in their support. I obtained my ticket online a few weeks in advance and took a bus from the airport to the match and then a taxi back. The atmosphere was very good and I will never forget watching Rangers play live. Bravo!

I witnessed the disaster of 1971. It will be a part of my memory for the rest of my life. God bless you all.

It is a longer journey, but you have a greater chance of getting a seat. After the match, expect queues at Ibrox Station.

It is a longer journey, but with more opportunity to obtain a seat. Queues at Ibrox Station will be present following the match.

Graham Carson wrote: As a Rangers fan for over fifty years, I have to advise that the photo of Ibrox from the early 1990s is mirrored (back to front) except for the surrounding buildings which are in the wrong places. The cars all appear as if driving on the right, otherwise a great website.

As a lifelong Rangers fan I would like to share with you that the visual representation of Ibrox from the early 1990s is actually reversed (mirror image)

Apart from the surrounding buildings being in the wrong places and the cars appearing to be driving on the right, all aspects of the design are prosaic and unimaginative

Otherwise a great website

On the night the European Cup Winners Cup trophy was brought back to the Stadium and especially the semi final against Bayern Munich, many games against Celtic were good. Some were not, but always fun. Ibrox is a great place to see a great club.
