History and description

The Estadio Ingeniero Hilario Sánchez was officially opened on 9 September 1951. At the time, it was only a small ground consisting of wooden stands. In the 1970s and 1980s, under the leadership of club president Hilario Sánchez, San Martín expanded as a club, which included the construction of new concrete stands.

Hilario Sánchez died in 1987, and six months later the stadium was named in his honor. It temporarily changed names between 1995 and 2006.

In 2007, San Martín promoted to the Primera División. At that time, the stadium could only hold 12,000 people. In one month, and in time before the start of the new season, a new terrace was built that could hold 8,000 fans.
