History and description

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard stadium was built on a plot of land donated by its founder, Geoffroy Guichard, and named after him. The president of the club, his son Pierre, in turn decided to name the stadium after his father. The opening of the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard was officially celebrated on 13 September 1931 with a match between AS Saint-Etienne and Cannes.

The stadium consisted of a single grand stand of 800 seats and several terraces. The adjacent steel works regularly blew their fumes over the pitch.

In 1956, Stade Geoffroy-Guichard underwent a major change when the running tracks were removed and the stands were remodeled in a rectangular shape.

In 1968, after the city of Saint-Etienne had acquired the stadium, further works were performed, which included a brand new stand opposite the main stand and covers for the two kop stands. This resulted in a capacity of almost 40,000.

The stadium was expanded and renovated for the Euro 1984 Championships, resulting in a capacity of 48,270. During the championships it hosted two group matches.

It took until a next major tournament, the 1998 World Cup, for the stadium to receive further major upgrades. Seats were installed and corporate facilities were increased.

During the 1998 World Cup, Stade Geoffroy-Guichard hosted five group matches and the round of 16 match between Argentina and England.

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard was chosen in 2011 to host the Euro 2016 Championship, and as a result, had to undergo major redevelopment works.

A new 41,500-seat arena was rebuilt or renovated before the start of the 2014/15 season.

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard hosted three first round group games and the round of 16 games between Poland and Switzerland on June 17th, 2016.

How to get to Stade Geoffroy-Guichard

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard is located north of the city of Saint-Étienne, just over 2 kilometers from the city center. It can be reached in about half an hour on foot. Alternatively, one can take either tram T1 or T2 from the city centre (Place Jean Jaurès), which will take them in a northerly direction. After getting off at stop G. Guichard, it is a 5 to 10-minute walk to the stadium.

The main rail station, Ch-teaucreux, can be accessed by bus 9 in the direction of Montreynaud. The bus stop Le Marais is a short walk from the stadium. Buses run at least once every 15 minutes, and the ride will take about 10 minutes.

The stadium is located on the left. If travelling from Lyon, follow the A72 motorway until you reach Saint-Étienne. From the A72, take exit 13 Montreynaud/Technopole and turn right toward the city. Follow for about a kilometre and turn right onto the Rue Camille de Rochetaillée. After a few hundred metres turn right again onto the Rue Paul et Pierre Guichard. The stadium is located on the left.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Stade Geoffroy-Guichard

The Stade Geoffroy-Guichard is located in an area that is a mix of office buildings, industry, and other sports facilities. It is not particularly appealing, with few options for eating and drinking around, which is why it is better to do this in Saint-Etienne's city center. There are no hotels near Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, however if you arrive by car, both Hotel Austria and Hotel Ibis Saint-Etienne are decent options along the A72, and only a 15 to 20-minute walk away.

If you are arriving by public transport in Saint-Etienne, staying in the city centre or near the railway station is probably the best option. There are a number of decent options available, which can be found here.

Although he planned to enjoy the city center, his first task was to check in to his hotel. He was disappointed that this process was so difficult. The stadium in St Etienne is built in the style of an English football stadium and there are many restaurants and bars close by. Dilworth watched Portugal defeat Iceland in an exciting Euro match. He found the atmosphere mesmerizing and enjoyed the experience of being part of a neutral audience. When it came time to leave, he got lost and asked two local policemen for directions to his hotel. They were so helpful that they took him on a walking tour of the city until he reached his destination.

My trip to St Etienne, the city, is complicated by difficulty checking into my hotel, embarrassment really, the stadium is in the English style, a lot of places nearby to eat and drink, I was there for Portugal v Iceland in the Euros, great atmosphere, I was in the neutral section but Portuguese everywhere! I came out into near darkness and got lost. I asked two local gendarmes for directions to walk to my hotel, it was miles away, one of them shouted "be careful? after me!!."
