History and description

The Fritz-Walter-Stadion, then still called Sportplatz Betzenberg, was built in 1920. It initially consisted of one wooden stand, a sandy pitch, and changing facilities for the players. The Sportplatz Betzenberg opened on May 13, 1920 with a Kaiserslautern vs. FC Pfalz Ludwigshafen match (0-2).

In 1930, the wooden stand was destroyed in a large storm, which formed the prelude of a large redevelopment resulting in a new main stand and concrete terraces.

The Stadion Betzenberg was further expanded in 1953 and could hold just over 30,000 spectators.

In the following decades, the club gradually expanded and modernized the stadium, with new stands being opened at the long sides in 1963 and 1973. After both ends had undergone extensive refurbishments in the late 1970s and mid-1980s, the redevelopment was complete and capacity had increased to 38,000. At the same time, the name of the stadium got changed to Fritz-Walter-Stadion.

The city even managed to get UEFA to allow them to rename the stadium "Kaiserslautern Arena" in 2009. Despite delays, Kaiserslautern initiated redevelopment efforts in 1994 with the construction of a new north stand. In 1998, they completed construction of a new south stand, which helped confer the stadium its current title - Kaiserslautern Arena. Additionally, the city was able to successfully petition UEFA to rename the stadium "Kaiserslautern Arena" in 2009.

Work started on expanding the north and south stands at the Fritz Walter stadium in 2006 in a similar style.

The 2006 World Cup was hosted at Fritz-Walter-Stadion in Germany, which hosted four group matches and the round of 16 match between Italy and Australia.

Despite the name change, the stadium is still commonly referred to as Betzenberg Stadium.

How to get to Fritz-Walter-Stadion

The Fritz-Walter-Stadion is located just south of the city centre of Kaiserslautern, at only a few hundred metres from the main railway station. From the station it is a 5-minute walk uphill and from the city centre it takes about 10 minutes longer to get to the stadium by foot. Do not park near the stadium on matchdays because there is insufficient parking and it would be more convenient to park in the center of Kaiserslautern and walk to the stadium.

Address: Fritz-Walter-Straße 1, 67663 Kaiserslautern
