History and description

It has a capacity of 52,000 people. The Olympic Stadium Nilton Santos, previously called the Olympic Stadium João Havelange and often nicknamed Engenhão, opened for the 2007 Pan-American Games that were hosted by Rio de Janeiro. The stadium officially opened on 30 June 2007 with a match between Botafogo and Fluminense. It has a seating capacity of 52,000 people. The Rio de Janeiro government, which owns the stadium where the Olympic games will be held next year, put out a tender for the use of the stadium after the games. Botafogo was the only club to bid, and so they were granted permission to lease it for a period of twenty years.

Following Maracaña's closure for World Cup construction in 2010, both Flamengo and Fluminense moved most of their home matches to the Engenhao.

In 2013, construction on the stadium's roof was halted due to structural problems.

Engenhao, owned by the city of Rio de Janeiro, was selected to host the athletics events of the 2016 Olympics. The opening and closing ceremonies were held at Maracana, though capacity was increased to 60,000 seats for Engenhao.

In 2015, the city of Rio allowed Botafogo to rename the stadium Estadio Nilton Santos in honour of their ex-player. In 2017, the stadium got officially renamed Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos.

Due to its large distance from the stands, Engenhão has often been viewed as a somewhat cold and soulless football stadium.

How to get to Engenhao

The Estadio Olimpico Nilton Santos is located in the east of Rio de Janeiro, about 13 kilometers from downtown Rio and more than 20 kilometers from Copacabana and Ipanema. There is ample parking available. The stadium is located close to the Amarel highway exit 3 and the Brasilia avenue. The exit is clearly signposted from the Amarel highway, and there is plenty of free parking available.

Train station Egenho de Dentro lies near the stadium. It can be reached by taking a commuter train from Rio's main rail station, Central do Brasil, which is close to Rio's downtown. The red (Ramal Deodora), green (Ramal Santa Cruz), and blue (Ramal Japeri) lines all connect Central do Brasil with Egenho de Dentro. Trains run at least every 15 minutes.

From Copacabana and Ipanema, take the metro to the Central metro station. From there take a train as described above.

Address: Rua José dos Reis 425, Engenho de Dentro, Rio de Janeiro

Botafogo Tickets

Tickets for Botafogo matches can be purchased online, at the ticket windows of the Engenhao, at the club store at  the Av. Venceslau Bras 72 in Botafogo (near Sugerloaf Mountain), or through one of the other sales outlets. However, tickets are not typically sold at a central location. Ticket prices for matches against opponents of different levels vary, but are typically between R$30.00 and R$50.00.

Botafogo may play the odd home game at a different stadium, so it is important to check the venue before heading to the Engenhao.

Bernardo Reis wrote: March 6, 2015 at 9:58 PM I'm sorry to say that I much preferred the TV stadium over the real one. The acoustics were horrible, the stands were too steep, and there was a track around the pitch which killed any kind of intimate feel. Only worthwhile if for a top notch game, otherwise travellers should give preference to Maracanã and São Januario.

I was pleased to see the TV stadium featured in an article, but found it disappointing in person. The poor sound quality and steep stands behind the goals detracted from the experience. The track that circles the pitch destroys any intimacy, and is only worth visiting for a high-quality game. Travellers should give preference to Maracanã and São Januario when choosing a stadium to watch a game.

Fernando Barra wrote on July 20, 2013 at 2:49 am that the stadium is closed due to a problem on the roof. The works to fix it will go until the end of 2014. In the beginning of 2016, the stadium will be closed again for the works to host the Olympic games.
