History and description

The Eintracht-Stadion was built in 1923, when Eintracht needed a larger replacement for their ground on the Helmstedter Straße. On the 17th of June 1923, the stadium opened its doors to a friendly match between Eintracht and FC Nürnberg. One year later, on the 17th of June 1924, the main stand was completed and that allowed for the stadium to hold 24,000 spectators.

Eintracht-Stadion underwent a massive renovation after World War II and was able to hold up to 30,000 people. In 1955, the DFB-Cup final between Karlsruher SC and Schalke 04 was played there. It was later expanded to a capacity of 40,000 when Eintracht promoted to the Bundesliga in 1963.

The Eintracht-Stadion received additional cover in the 1970s and underwent construction of a new main stand in 1979, as a replacement to the old wooden main stand. spiraling construction costs and relegation to the 2. Bundesliga almost resulted in the bankruptcy of the club.

During the 1980s and early 1990s, the southern curve of Eintracht-Stadion slowly deteriorated and was closed to the public for safety reasons. Over time, the area became overgrown with bushes and trees.

Construction of a new south curve, conversion of standing areas into seating, and new floodlights finally began in 1995.

The construction of a new covered north curve continued in the late 2000s, and eventually in 2013 the refurbishment of the main stand was undertaken mainly with the goal of adding and improving hospitality facilities.
