History and description

The Luminus Arena was originally called the Cristal Arena and is the home of Thor Waterschei. In 1988, Waterschei merged with Winterslag to form KRC Genk. After two years, the club decided to move back to the André Dumontstadion. In the meantime, a new main stand had been erected and its name was changed to Thyl Gheyselinckstadion.

The club's increased successes in the late 1990s led to a major redevelopment program that aimed to turn the stadium into a modern arena. A first phase of two new two-tiered covered stands were built, and at the same time a sponsorship deal resulted in the name change to Fenix Stadion.

The South Stand was rebuilt in 2002 in the style of the other new stands and a few years later the main stand was extensively renovated, resulting in a fully enclosed stadium.

In 2007, the naming rights of the stadium were sold to beer brewery Alken-Maes. In 2016, the stadium changed name to Luminus Arena following a new sponsorship deal.

Genk has occasionally considered expanding the Luminus Arena to either 35,000 or 44,000 places, but currently there are no plans to do so.
