History and description

Construction began in 1922 and was completed two years later. In the early 20th century, Anderlecht's popularity was growing rapidly and the club was in need of a new home. They found a site at the Astridpark in the Anderlecht borough and plans got quickly approved by the local council. Construction began in 1922 and was completed two years later. The Constant Vanden Stock Stadion opened in the summer of 1918, and was initially named in honour of the first president of the club, Emile Versé.

The Stade Emile Versé initially only consisted of a wooden stand, which was replaced by a concrete stand when the club promoted to the first division in 1935.

In the 1950s, additional terraces were constructed. In 1962, a new seating stand was built on top of one of these terraces, increasing its capacity to nearly 40,000.

This was the highest attendance recorded by any club in the league that season.

In 1983, the club embarked on a major redevelopment of the stadium. Parts of the stadium were reconstructed, including the main stand. In subsequent years, work continued on all other stands. Upon completion of the main stand, the stadium was renamed in honour of club president Constant Vanden Stock.

The Constant Vanden Stock Stadion was not selected as a playing venue for the Euro 2000 tournament because its capacity did not meet the 30,000 threshold. Instead, local government funds that could have been used to expand the stadium were invested in the Stade Roi Baudouin. The club then decided to invest their own funds in improving their squad.

In the summer of 2012, Stadium underwent a small refurbishment to keep it eligible to host Champions League matches. Works included the installation of new and more spacious seats, which in turn reduced stadium capacity from just over 26,000 to its current total of 21,500.

For many years, Anderlecht have been looking into the option of either expanding the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium or constructing a new stadium. While preferring the former, plans to expand the stadium were not approved because local citizens objected, and as a result, Anderlecht decided to become the occupant of the future Eurostadium despite feeling that the 60,000 capacity is much too large for the club.

The Eurostadium is expected to be completed by the summer of 2019, meaning that Anderlecht will have to move out of the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium at the end of the 2018-19 season. There is currently no decision made yet about what will happen with the stadium after that, with local legislators studying the options.

How to get to Constant Vanden Stock Stadion

The Constant Vanden Stock Stadion is situated in the west of Brussels, close to the city centre. The theatre is about 500 metres on the left. From the Brussels ring road, exit 14 Anderlecht. Turn towards the city and drive on Boulevard Sylvain Dupuis. After almost a kilometer turn right at the traffic lights, and after a few hundred meters left onto the Théo Verbeecklaan. The theatre is about 500 meters on the left.

There are few parking spaces available around the stadium, and it may be best to leave your car at Westland Shopping right after exiting the ring road.

If you arrive by public transport, take Metro Line 5 in the direction of Erasmus and exit at Saint-Guidon station. From there, it is a small walk to the stadium. Line 5 passes Brussels' main railway station (Gare Centrale), which is located in the center of the city.

Address: Avenue Théo Verbeecklaan 2, Bruxelles 1070 Brussel

Eat, drink, and sleep near Constant Vanden Stock Stadion

The Constant Vanden Stock Stadion is located in the Astridpark neighborhood, which is a residential area. It is bordered on two sides by the nice Astridpark (Parc Astrid). The stadium is a reasonably lively area, and there are a few pubs and restaurants around. However, the options obviously pale in comparison with Brussels' city center. There are no hotels located near the stadium. However, the Hotel New Prince de Liège is about 20 minutes away on foot. Additionally, the Hotel Erasme is located near the ring road at the end of metro line 5. For a more detailed overview of the hotels near the Constant Vanden Stock Stadion, please click here.

Otherwise, the hotels near Brussels Midi railway station are not too far away from the stadium, even (just) at walking distance (or get tram 81). There are, of course, also plenty of options in Brussels city centre, which is a short metro ride away.

The website of the RSC Anderlecht football club, Brussels' tourist bureau, and public transport timetables are all official sources of information about Brussels. The stadium is comfortable and food and drink outlets are located inside it. I was quite disappointed with the lack of support from the home fans. Maybe it was due to a weaker opponent. Overall, Brussels is beautiful and I recommend every football fan to go and attend a match at Constant Vanden Stock Stadium.

Regardless of the opponent, I believe that all football fans should go and experience a match at Constant Vanden Stock Stadium. This is because both the stadium and the city of Brussels are extremely beautiful. There are a wide range of food and drink outlets located inside the stadium so you can easily grab something to eat or drink. Additionally, I think that the stadium's lack of support from home fans was due to a weaker opponent rather than any dislike or dislike for the sport itself. Overall, I think that Brussels is an amazing place to watch a football match and I definitely recommend it to any footy fan!

There are actually small cafe-style bars within each area of the Stadium where you can have a beer or soft drink, before, during and after the match. Overall, it was a good visiting experience with a pleasant atmosphere.

The RSC Anderlecht team visited the Constant Vanden Stock Stadium on 4 March 2012 to play Cercle Brugge.
