Cagliari Calcio

Founded in 1920, Cagliari Calcio have won the Italian championship three times, most recently in 1970 when they clinched the historic title. Based on these successes, it is believed that the current club was formed sometime between 1900 and 1910. A previous version existed before this under a different name, making the club one of the oldest football clubs in Britain, if not one of the oldest still in existence! The history of Club Sportivo Cagliari begins in 1913. That day a group of students from University College Sardinia founded their own football club, which four years later merged with US Italia to form "Club sorce time" - as it is today under known to fans all over the world! Two disparate entities that share one commonality: the love of football at all costs, no matter what level you play it at or how old we get over our lifespan, is truly amazing when you review history.

Cagliari's success in Italy is unprecedented. The club won the Italian championship, their biggest success to date, having been runners-up a year ago! This feat would not have been possible without Gigi Riva, who played a key role in both Cagliari teams and was loved by fans across the country. He even became something of an icon as he also set records at international level - scoring goals down the left flank and down the middle.

The 1994 season was a great season for Cagliari, who failed to match their successes in other competitions. They were eliminated after two rounds as runners-up in the UEFA Cup and then lost again at European level, beating Atlético Madrid 3-2 (0-3). In the game against league rivals Inter Milan, there was a big surprise when the former underdogs defeated Juventus 1-0, despite having already beaten ManUnited 2-1 that year!
