La Bombonera: How to get there and how to buy tickets (2022)

The La Bombonera stadium was built in 1938 and 1940. It is said that its name was given to it because the architect suddenly realized the similarity between the stadium and a chocolate (bombon).

History and description

The La Bombonera stadium was built between 1938 and 1940, and as the legend goes, its name is said to have come from when the architect suddenly realised the similarities between the stadium and a chocolate he was eating. Boca Juniors had played at the site since 1924 and up until that point, it had been a rather simple wooden stadium. After Boca bought the land in 1931, it then started making plans to build a new concrete stadium that could hold 100,000 fans.

On May 25th, 1940, the official opening of La Bombonera took place with a friendly match between Boca Juniors and San Lorenzo. However, it wasn't until 1941 that the second tier of La Bombonera was completed. The third tier was finally constructed between 1951 and 1953.

The La Bombonera at the time had stands on three sides. The fourth side was left open with just a few VIP boxes and an obelisk, due to the lack of space across the street due to the residential buildings.

Boca Juniors almost moved to a new stadium in the 1970s, but political and economic turmoil ended the construction that had just begun.

In 1986, the stadium was named Estadio Alberto J. Armando in honour of the former iconic club president. However, most fans have continued to call the stadium La Bombonera.

In 1996, a small stand that was higher than the previous one was installed on the open site. This stand primarily consisted of VIP boxes.

The proposed new stadium for Boca Juniors, near La Bombonera in Buenos Aires, will have a capacity of 75,000 spectators. It is still in preliminary stages, but the team's plans call for La Bombonera to remain standing and be used for other purposes.

How to get to La Bombonera

La Bombonera is located in the south of Buenos Aires city centre, very close to the Plaza de Mayo and popular nightlife area San Telmo. It is recommend that visitors either take a taxi or go by public transport to get to La Bombonera.

The stadium lacks a metro station in its vicinity, but the walk from the San Telmo area should take no more than half an hour.

There are many buses that pass close to the stadium, of which most also cross the city center (microcentro). Take one of the following buses in southern direction: 10, 20, 22, 24, 25, 29, 33, 39, 46, 53, 54, 64, 70, 74, 86, 93, 102 or 129.

Address: Brandsen 805, Capital Federal

Eat, drink, and sleep near La Bombonera

The Bombonera stadium lies in the middle of La Boca, an area with a slightly negative reputation in terms of safety. However, during the day, it is relatively safe as it is located adjacent to the famous and touristy Caminito de la Boca. At night, however, care should be taken as the area around the stadium can be unsafe. There are various restaurants and bars around the Caminito de la Boca, but it may be a better alternative to visit the San Telmo area near the north end of the district. Many of these establishments are clustered around Plaza Dorrego. It is less than thirty minutes walking from there to Estadio Bernabéu.

There are few hotels near La Bombonera, but plenty of options in the San Telmo area. Some of the best-rated, more expensive options include Tiana Hotel Boutique, Telmho Hotel Boutique, Bohemia Hotel, and Hotel Babel. Expect to pay between US$ 60.00 and US$ 110.00.

The cheapest and most basic options for hotels include Hotel Carly, Hotel Chipre, and Hotel Casablanca. There are also many hostels in the San Telmo area. For an overview, please click here.

Boca Juniors Tickets

Boca Juniors has ceased selling tickets to the general public and only allows members of the club to enter the stadium. Many ticket agencies offer discounted packages that go for exceedingly high prices.

The official website of CA Boca Juniors, the city of Buenos Aires, and public transport journey planner Comoviajo are all available here. Walk from the metro station to the stadium is not the easiest one, but you can get a very cheap taxi. The stadium is very unique. The atmosphere is always nice, but I would say it is overrated since so many tourist come there.

He never showed up, and the other 10 people waiting at the metro station had to walk from the station to the stadium. The stadium isn't the easiest place to get to, and taxis are very cheap there. The atmosphere at the stadium is always nice, but I'd say it's overrated since so many tourists come there.

Throughout the game, a continuous torrent of spit poured from above. This included objects like a car tyre and a shopping trolley! It was an extraordinary experience. Boca lost 1-0.

I attended the last game of Batistuta's career with Boca Juniors v San Lorenzo in 1991. At that time, fans could enter for free if they happened to be in the vicinity. I was standing behind the goal and San Lorenzo fans were on a tier above. A continuous torrent of spit from above endured throughout the game, but also thrown down was a car tire and, no kidding, a shopping trolley! It was an experience I'll never forget. Boca lost 1-0.

When you walk into the restaurant, you'll find that it's nothing special. However, the steak was amazing and only cost £5 with a beer. After the tour, we walked down to La Camitino tourist area. It's only a five-minute walk, and we didn't have any problems walking there, but be careful because apparently there is a lot of crime in this area between the stadium and the start of Main Street. Buenos Aires is brilliant!

I would recommend the steak restaurant directly across from the stadium. It's nothing special when you walk in, but the steak was amazing! And for only about £5 with a beer, afterward we walked down to La Camitino tourist area, which is only a five-minute walk. We didn't have any problems, but be a little careful because apparently they have a lot of crime in this area between the stadium and the start of Main Street.

Buneos Aires is brilliant !
