History and description

The stadium was originally built with a capacity of 12,000, but has since been expanded to its current seating capacity of over 50,000. The Bloomfield Stadium was built in the 1960s to replace Hapoel's Basa Stadium. Funding came from a Canadian charity, which requested that the stadium be named after the Bloomfield brothers in honour of their support of the development of sports in Israel. The stadium originally had a capacity of 12,000, but has since been expanded to its current seating capacity of over 50,000. On 12 December 1962, the stadium opened with a friendly match between Hapoel and Dutch side Twente (1-1). At the time, it could hold 18,000 spectators.

In 1962, the Bnei Yahuda religious community moved into the stadium. Soon after, Maccabi also moved in. However, in 1970, Bnei Yahuda left the stadium and Maccabi took up residence there for extended periods of time.

In the late 1990s, the city took over ownership of the stadium and undertook a series of refurbishments reducing capacity to 14,000.

In 2000, Maccabi moved into the stadium again, and in 2004 Bnei Yehuda as well, both times permanently.

In 2016, Bloomfield Stadium closed down for an extensive redevelopment project that took three Years to complete. The stadium was completely modernized and its capacity increased to 29,400 seats. For the period, the three Tel Aviv clubs played at Netanya?s Netanya Stadium.

How to get to Bloomfield Stadium

Bloomfield Stadium is located in central Tel Aviv on the southern edge of the city. It is near the old port of Jaffa. It is a short 5-minute walk to Jaffa, a 10-minute walk to the Neve Tzedek neighbourhood, but further, at least half an hour but likely more, from the proper city centre.

Take a taxi or local bus to get to the stadium. The city centre is located close to the stadium on Rabin Square or King George Street. Bus 25 from Rabin Square or King George Street passes right next to the stadium. Bus 40 is an alternative that runs close to the beachfront on Ben-Yehuda Street. It takes you to Jaffa from where it's a short walk to the stadium.
