History and description

The Estadio Benito Villamarín was built in 1929 for the Ibero-American Exposition that took place in Seville that year. The first football match played at the stadium was an international between Spain and Portugal on March 17, 1929. After, Betis started playing occasional home matches at the stadium, though Campo del Patronato remained their regular home until 1936.

The stadium initially went by the name of Heliópolis Stadium, was rectangular in shape, and could hold about 18,000 spectators.

Due to the close proximity of the river Guadalquivir, the stadium experienced heavy damage in a flood in 1948.

In 1978, the first roof was put on the stadium, and then a more ambitious redevelopment began in 1988 that aimed at modernizing the stadium. The most recent redevelopment started in 2009 and was finished in 2013. The first redevelopment of Estadio de Heliópolis occurred in 1958. It was bought by Club Atlético Heliópolis in 1961 and remained modest until the 1970s. In 1978, a roof was put on the stadium, and then an ambitious redevelopment began in 1988. The project aimed at modernizing the stadium; however, it was not completed until 2013.

The renamed Estadio Benito Villamarin underwent several small redevelopments in the 1970s. However, it only got properly developed with the perspective of the 1982 World Cup, which could then hold about 47,500 spectators.

During the World Cup, the stadium hosted two first round group matches.

The Estadio Benito Villamarin remained unchanged until Betis in 1998 decided to practically completely rebuild the stadium. New three-story stands were built on the north and eastern sides of the stadium, which complemented the already three-story West Stand.

The stadium was renamed Estadio Manuel Ruiz de Lopera after the then-owner of the club. The works, however, stalled after that and the remaining single-tiered South Stand was left single-tiered, without any roofs installed.

After Ruiz de Lopera had left the club in 2010, the Estadio Benito Villamarin fan group voted to reinstall the old name.

In 2015, a decision was made to tear down the single-tiered South Stand and replace it with a new three-tiered stand in line with the rest of the stadium. Works started in the summer of 2016 and were completed in the summer of 2017, increasing stadium capacity to just over 60,000 seats.

How to get to Estadio Benito Villamarin

It has a capacity of 33,000 spectators and was built in 1970. The Estadio Benito Villamarin is located in the south of the city of Seville, about 3 kilometers from the historic city centre. It has a capacity of 33,000 spectators and was built in 1970. The stadium is located on the Avenida la Palmera, which runs straight through it and connects it to the centre of the city. Eat, drink, and sleep near Estadio Benito Villamarin

The Estadio Benito Villamarin is located in a quiet residential area. There are the odd bars and restaurants around, mostly in the area near the river, but you are likely better off eating and drinking in Seville's historic center. There are a few hotels around Estadio Benito Villamarin. One is the Silken Al-Andalus Palace, which is located 200 metres from the stadium, and has good reviews. Another, the boutique Hotel Holos, is a little more expensive, while Hotel Sevilla Palmero is somewhat further away but still easily at walking distance.

If you have more money to spend, then Villa de la Palmera will likely be your choice for a hotel, and hostel Albergue Interjoven is good for those on a budget.

If you plan to spend more time in Seville's historic centre, staying there would be more interesting. Many options are available here.

Tickets for Real Betis matches can be purchased at the ticket windows of the stadium in the week preceding the match (closed between 2:00pm and 5:00pm). However, following the expansion of the stadium in 2017 demand has further surged so buying tickets in advance is recommended.

Prices for tickets to live matches generally range from ?30.00 for an upper-tier seat behind the goal to ?60.00 for a central seat at the main stand, though prices may be increased for high-profile fixtures.

Do not make the mistake I made, there is no alcohol served inside the stadium so enjoy the convenience of a small beer shack selling cans of beer for 2 euros right in front of the stadium. The atmosphere is amazing, and I definitely recommend it!.
