History and description

The new stadium was named after BayArena?s then-owner, the Bayer corporation. The stadium has a capacity of over 50,000 spectators and is located in the north-east of the city next to the motorway A7. BayArena, previously called Ulrich-Haberland-Stadion, was built in the mid 1950s to replace Bayer's previous home Bayer Sportplatz. The new stadium was named after BayArena's then-owner, the Bayer corporation. The stadium has a capacity of over 50,000 spectators and is located in the north-east of the city next to the motorway A7. It was completely renovated in 2001, and now has a new covered main stand that can hold up to 36,000 spectators.

In 1979, Bayer promoted to the Bundesliga and a new temporary East Stand was built though more significant improvements were needed to successfully compete at the highest level.

In 1986, the club embarked on a major redevelopment project to rebuild all three stands at their stadium. Works started with the reconstruction of the new West Stand, continued with the East Stand, and were then completed with both ends, enclosing the entire stadium.

The works were completed in 1997 and resulted in a capacity of 22,500 seats, all of which were covered. A year later, the stadium's name got changed to BayArena.

The new BayArena quickly became too small for the increasing fanbase of the club, and as a result, a $70-million expansion project was announced.

In 2007, construction began on a new addition to the stadium that increased the capacity by about 10 percent. Additionally, some seats were converted into standing spaces and a new roof was installed.

The roof supports itself externally from the stadium, meaning that future capacity increases will be relatively easy.

How to get to the BayArena

The BayArena is located in the center of Leverkusen, near the intersections of the A1 and A3 motorways. Even though the stadium lies adjacent to the A1, it does not have its own exit. The best way to reach the stadium is from the A3. Take exit 24 Leverkusen, turn east onto the Willy Brandt Ring, turn left onto the Kalkstraße, turn left again onto the Gustav-Heinemann-Straße, and, after passing underneath the A3, right onto the Bismarckstraße.

Alternatively, take exit 22 Leverkusen-Opladen, turn right onto the Bonner Straße, direct right again onto the Europaring, and after passing underneath the A3, left onto the Bismarckstraße. After about a kilometer, you will reach the stadium.

The BayArena is located about 10 minutes' walk from Leverkusen Mitte metro stop. Leverkusen Mitte is served by line 6, which runs between Cologne and Düsseldorf. The journey from both cities takes about half an hour.

Can one take a train from Cologne's main railway station and get off at Leverkusen Schlebusch station? (A 15-minute ride will get you there.) From there it is a 15-minute walk to the stadium.

Address: Bismarckstraße 122, 51373 Leverkusen

Eat, drink, and sleep near the BayArena

The BayArena is located in a residential neighbourhood in Leverkusen, which is not among Germany's most attractive cities. While Leverkusen does have some eating and drinking options, it is not a very walkable city centre. If you are looking for a hotel near the BayArena, Lindner Hotel Bayarena is an excellent option since it is located inside the stadium building. There are other nearby choices including BestWestern Hotel Leverkusen and Hotel Brauhaus Manforter Hof, both of which are rated 4-star hotels. However, the Ibis Hotel in Leverkusen's center is slightly cheaper. For more information about hotels near the BayArena, please click here.

If you have more time on your hands, you can also consider staying in Cologne or Düsseldorf, which are much more interesting cities. You can take the S-Bahn to the stadium for the match.

I went to see Leverkusen vs Leipzig in Oktober. I travelled from Dusseldorf by train to Leverkusen and walked through the local park to get to the BayArena.

Everything runs smoothly here and the mood is very laid back and family-friendly. You can use your credit card everywhere, so there's no need for those pesky stadium cards. The view from upper seats is great and there's enough terrace action to keep you entertained.

After getting off the train in Cologne, I went to the stadium. It was a very modern and attractive stadium. The fans were friendly and it was not possible to use cash inside. Only cards were accepted. I was able to return the card after the game so that I could get my money back.

You cannot use cash inside the ground. Only cards are accepted. You will need to get one card and load it with cash. After the game, you can return this card to get your money back.

Recently, I saw your newly renovated stadium and I'm saddened that your old ground structure has gone. I loved the fact that your old floodlights were mounted on tall poles outdoors and above the away supporters' heads in the ground, and there were ceiling heaters like the old electric coils you used to see in household electric bar fires. Now our Highbury Ground has gone too, and I miss your old ground—but I'll never forget it. I keep an eye on your results and your my favorite club after Arsenal, best wishes to all staff, players, and fans.
