History and description

The ground was originally used by the Ley Cricket Club, which Sir Francis had also founded. The Baseball Ground was built in 1890 by Sir Francis Ley, who had destined it for a newly formed baseball team after he had become inspired by the sport while on a trip to the USA. The ground was originally used by the Ley Cricket Club, which Sir Francis had also founded. Not until 1895 did baseball gain popularity in the UK, and as a result Derby County reached an agreement with Ley to become the permanent tenant of the ground. Ley then invested £7,000 to increase seating capacity from 4,000 to 20,000.

Derby played its first match at the ground on September 14, 1895. An approximate 10,000 spectators saw them beat Sunderland 2-0.

Derby decided to buy the freehold on the Stadium from Francis Ley in the early 1920s.

Shortly thereafter, in 1926, Derby promoted to the First Division and took advantage of the opportunity to build a new main stand designed by Archibald Leitch. After the stand had been completed, attention turned to the opposite side (the Popular Side) where the terrace got enlarged and fitted with a cover.

The crowds at Derby kept growing in 1933, and a new double-decker stand was built at the Osmaston End. Two years later, a similar stand was built at the opposite end, thereby lifting capacity to a total of 38,000.

There were no changes made to the Ley Stand until in 1969, when the club once again took advantage of promotion to the First Division. The Popular Side was extensively redeveloped and renamed in honor of Sir Francis Ley.

The redevelopment of the stadium increased its capacity to just over 40,000 people. One of the benefits of this redevelopment was that the Baseball Ground became one of the few English stadiums with seating on all sides. Within a few years, in 1969, it recorded its highest attendance when 41,826 people came to a home match against Tottenham Hotspur.

Derby's sportive successes and finances slowly deteriorated and by the mid-1970s, changes to the stadium were only made in order to keep the increasing number of hooligans at bay.

In the early 1990s, the Baseball Ground got converted into an all-seater following the publication of the Taylor Report. This resulted in a decrease in capacity to 18,300 seats.

Many people found the ground to be unsuitable for an all-seater and so plans were made to rebuild three of the four stands. This left the Ley Stand intact.

While this scenario means that the club can remain at its cherished home, it would still rob the Baseball Ground of most of its character and it would not offer a solution for the access difficulties.

In February 1996, the club announced that it had acquired land to build a new stadium. Construction of Pride Park Stadium commenced later in 1996 and was completed in the summer of 1997.

Derby played its final match at the Baseball Ground on the 11th of May 1997. The home side lost the match 1-3 from Arsenal.

Between seasons two and three, the ground was used for reserve matches, but then it was sold to property developers. The ground finally got demolished in 2003 and replaced by residential housing. A commemorative statue of three football players was revealed at the place where once stood the Baseball Ground in 2010.

In his 26th message on 6:39pm on mei 2020, Steve Moss wrote: nothing ever compared with standing on the Popside level with Alan Hinton as he floated in those inch perfect corners. We used to love comparing the immaculate pitch in the programme with the quagmire that was our twelfth man. Football heaven, except for the men's? loo!

Standing on the Popside level with Alan Hinton as he floated in those inch perfect corners was always a heavenly experience. We loved comparing the immaculate pitch in the programme with the quagmire that was our twelfth man. Football heaven, except for the men's section!

It can certainly be said that for me, Sheffield United lost all eight of their matches against them in the 1969-75 period. They were beaten three times by a margin of 3 goals each. I find it difficult to believe that the current Pride Park Stadium can generate the same level of atmosphere.

It was for me (Sheffield United), for in 8 visits from 1969 to 1975 (6 league, 1 FA Cup and 1 Watney Cup) we lost them all, three by 3 goals. I doubted whether Pride Park, or whatever they call it now, could generate the same atmosphere!.
