History and description

It is the largest stadium in Mexico and the third largest in all of North America. The stadium was built in the 1960s to accommodate the needs of Club America and to provide Mexico with a premier venue for the upcoming 1970 World Cup. It is the largest stadium in Mexico and third largest in all of North America. The Estadio Azteca stadium was designed by architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez after a careful study of the most famous European stadiums of that time. Construction of the stadium, which took four years, was not easy due to the hard volcanic rock the land consisted of.

The stadium, which has an official capacity of 100,000, has been the home of Club America since its construction. The Estadio Azteca officially opened on 29 May 1966 with a friendly match between America and Italian side Torino. The stadium has an official capacity of 100,000 and has been the home of Club America since its construction.

Both matches were played in front of over 160,000 spectators. The 1970 World Cup had a total of 10 matches played in it, including a semi-final and the final between Brazil and Italy. Both matches were attended by over 160,000 spectators.

Sixteen years later, the famous Estadio Azteca hosted a World Cup final. It was the only stadium to host two World Cup finals until 2014, when it shared the honour with Maracana.

The stadium underwent a refurbishment prior to the start of the World Cup, and it hosted 9 matches--including the famous quarter-final between Argentina and England (2-1), a semi-final, and the final between Argentina and Germany (3-2).

In the following decades, safety measures reduced capacity from 115,000 in 1986 to around 100,000 in the 2000s. In 2016, the stadium underwent a large refurbishment including the addition of VIP facilities, which resulted in a decrease to 84,000 seats.

In 2018, Cruz Azul relocated back into Estadio Azteca, having used it as its home in the 1970s and 1980s.

The stadium is a regular playing venue for the Mexican national team, and for years it was the home of Necaxa before they moved to Aguacalientes.

How to get to Estadio Azteca

The Estadio Azteca is located in the south of Mexico City, about fifteen kilometres from the historic city centre. The stadium is easily accessible by metro and the connecting light rail. First take metro line 2 (which crosses the city’s historic centre) to its final stop Tasqueña, and then transfer to the light rail, which has a similar look as the metro, but for which a separate ticket is required. Get off at stop Estadio Azteca.

If arriving by metro, take the Metro Line 3 directly to the stadium stop, and walk a few blocks north to the main entrance on Avenida Tlalpan.

Alternatively, the stadium can be reached from the Anillo Pereférico ring road, which passes just south of the stadium. Take exit Estadio Azteca. The lot at the stadium is quite large, but expect to get stuck in traffic.

Dear [person], Thank you for your email. I am sorry to inform you that the store at Calzada de Tlalpan 3465, Col. Santa Úrsula Coapa, Distrito Federal 04650 is no longer open.

Eat, drink, and sleep near Estadio Azteca

The Estadio Azteca is located near a residential area, with few places to find entertainment. The north side of the stadium is a bit seedy, but that's all there is to it. Of course, before the match you can get a quesadilla from one of the vendors located outside the stadium. A little further away, but still within walking distance, the Fiesta Inn is a nice option. It is located next to Gran Sur shopping centre. The Holiday Inn Medica Sur is another decent option, located at similar distance.

There are many hotels in the historic centre of Mexico City, from which you can easily catch Metro line 2. More upscale are the areas around the Avenida Reforma, including the lively Condesa, Polanco, and Roma areas with their nightlife), which are also packed with hotels. You need an extra Metro change though to get onto line 2.

Club America Tickets

You can buy Club América tickets online through Ticketmaster, at the ticket windows (tickets) at the stadium, or through one of the Ticketmaster sales outlets. Tickets can be bought at the gates of the stadium on the day of the match. Due to its large size, América rarely sells out.

Prices for upper-tier seats in a typical league match vary depending on the opponent, typically going for around MX$ 100. Lower-tier seats can be bought for MX$ 200. Higher prices are typically charged for matches featuring more prestigious opponents, going up to between MX$ 500 and MX$ 1000.

Estadio Azteca stadium tours

The stadium tour at Estadio Azteca includes the press room, home dressing room, players tunnel, and dugouts. The tour lasts about thirty to forty minutes. There are tours running everyday from 10am to 5pm with no tours on matchdays or the day before a home match. To book a tour, simply go to the website and select the date and time you would like to take the tour.

The tour costs MX$ 105.00 per person.

Relevant Internet links

The website of Club América, Estadio Azteca, Mexicocity, and Metro are all official websites of the entities they represent. Chris H recommends the stadium to others. It is large and impressive, with a lot of history for a new stadium. I would like to see Club America play there, but I cannot during my trip.

I strongly recommend a visit to Club America's stadium. Yes, it is a bit short, but the overriding factor is that it is a huge and impressive stadium with a lot of history for a relatively new stadium. I would like to see Club America play here, but that's not possible during my trip.

It would have been nice to view the stadium from up the stands. However, we only saw the interior from around pitch level. It would also have been nice to see the business facilities, control room, and other behind-the-scenes areas. Right now, it was really the bare minimum. So, a very nice experience, definitely worth the metro ride, but a bit too short.

Date visited: 10 March 2012

In March 2012, we took the Estadio Azteca stadium tour. Previously, we had checked by phone whether it was not necessary to make a booking, which they indeed confirmed.

The stadium was easy to reach by metro and light rail. However, as it is located in the far south of the city, it still took some time to get to the stadium. You will definitely need 30 to 45 minutes to get there from the historic centre, though it would be wise to calculate some more time, especially when it rains.

The entrance to the tour was not at the Club América-Nike store right at the entrance, but on the right side of the stadium (from the metro station).

The guards were helpful enough to point us in the right direction though, and we arrived at the VisitStadium boutique just in time for the 1:00 pm tour.

After buying our ticket, we were sent to wait at a cafeteria with food and drink options. Our previous tour had just come back, and it seemed rather packed with about 30 people. However, it turned out that we were only six for our tour (which was apparently rather unusual based on the reaction of our guide).

A young man, probably a student, greeted us and was able to answer most of our questions. He seemed a little anxious though, so it may have been his first day on the job.

The tour started with a walk outside the stadium, then turned inside through the marathon tunnel, passed by the press room located in the tunnel, went into the América dressing room, and continued through the players tunnel to the pitch.

Then there was some time on the edge of the pitch to take pictures (of course, stepping onto the pitch was not allowed), and have your photo taken by the guide (which he printed out for free later). Finally, we walked back up the stands and inside to the cafeteria. All in all, it lasted only about a good 30 minutes.

The tour was interesting overall, but it felt a bit short. Most stadium tours last at least an hour, and it would have been nice to view the stadium from up the stands. We only saw the interior from around pitch level, which wasn't very comprehensive. It would also have been nice to see the business facilities, control room, and other behind-the-scenes areas. Right now it was really just the bare minimum.

The experience was very nice, and the ride on the metro was definitely worth it. However, I found it to be a bit too short.
