Description

The Middlesbrough Football Club started in 1876 and played its first game on the cricket ground at Ayresome Park. In 1899, they moved to an old woollen mill on the banks of the Tees River and called their new stadium, Ayresome Park. However, by the start of the 20th century, with their growing fan base, they were looking for a new site to build a stadium that could accommodate more fans. Consequently, in 1904 they relocated to a site just outside Middlesbrough called Linthorpe. At Linthorpe they played until 1969 when they once again relocated, this time to Teesside University's Roker Park. After Roker Park closed in 2008, the club announced that it was looking for a new home, and in July 2013 they announced that they had found a new location - a site on the outskirts of Middlesbrough called The Riverside Stadium. The stands were built in 1904 and 1905, respectively.

The next major development came in 1994 when a new North Stand was added in order to house the club's rising fan-base. Ayresome Park officially opened on September 9, 1902 with a friendly match between Middlesbrough and Celtic (1-0). The ground remained relatively unchanged until a new South Stand got built in 1937. The next major development came in 1994 when a new North Stand was added to house the club's growing fan-base.

In 1949, Ayresome Park recorded a 53,802 attendance when Middlesbrough beat Newcastle United.

Ayresome Park was one of the playing venues of the 1966 World Cup. It was chosen ahead of St James' Park due to a dispute between Newcastle United and the city of Newcastle.

With the perspective of the World Cup, 4,000 additional seats were added and the East End terrace received cover. This reduced capacity to 42,000 places.

During the World Cup, three group matches were played at Ayresome Park. The first match was the shock-defeat of the Italians at the hands of North Korea.

In 2002 holes were found in the stadium's metal frame, which established that the stadium was in critical condition. Despite warnings from various officials and experts, the state of the stadium continued to decline over the next several decades. In 1980 two fans died when they were hit by debris when a brick pillar collapsed. In 2002 holes were found in the stadium's metal frame, confirming that it was in critical condition. Consequently, efforts have been made to address these issues as soon as possible.

The ground became locked in 1986 when the club went through liquidation, due to their high debt. Middlesbrough was saved by a takeover.

In the 1990s, Ayresome Park was the first English club to start construction of a new stadium. Because the stadium had been significantly reduced in capacity due to safety measures, and lacked renovation possibilities because it was hemmed in by housing, Middlesbrough started construction of a new stadium.

Middlesbrough played its final match at Ayresome Park on the 30th of April 1995 when it hosted Luton Town. The 2-1 win sealed Middlesbrough's promotion to the Premier League, where it would kick off in the newly built Riverside Stadium.

Ayresome Park served as a training ground for several years before it was demolished to make way for housing. The old gates from the ground were later erected in front of Riverside Stadium.

James Bean wrote: On January 17, 2013, at 6:46pm, I remember the first game I ever watched at Ayresome Park - it was way back in 1947, the infamous Offside Goal by Fenton. Spuhler took a free kick straight into the net but the referee adjudged him offside - he was standing way out on the wing and most people agreed he was interfering with play. I think the controversy still goes on today - great memories of Ayresome Park! Memories that will never leave me up! The Boro.
