History and description

The Johan Cruijff ArenA, previously called Amsterdam ArenA, was built in the mid-1990s. It replaced Ajax's previous home De Meer, which had become too small for the club. On August 14, 1996, the Amsterdam ArenA officially opened with a match between Ajax and AC Milan. The first goal in the new arena was scored by Dejan Savicevic. The construction costs for the arena amounted to $96 million.

The Amsterdam ArenA is the first football stadium in Europe with a retractable roof. It takes about 20 minutes to open or close the roof.

Shortly after the opening, it became apparent that the stadium design had not accounted for good grass growing conditions, and as a result the pitch had to be renewed up to 5 times a year. These problems were later resolved with the installation of innovative grass growing technology, consisting of a combination of lamps, wind turbines, and water sprinklers.

The Johan Cruijff ArenA features a total of 2,229 business seats and 820 seats in sky boxes. The stands are among the steepest in Europe, with the second tier having an angle of 37 degrees.

In 1998, the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus was held at the stadium, and in 2013 the Europa League final between Chelsea and Benfica was also held there.

The Amsterdam ArenA was one of the venues used for the Euro 2000 championships. It hosted three group matches, a quarter-final, and the semi-final between Holland and Italy (0-0).

The stadium has been chosen to be one of the playing venues of the Euro 2020 tournament. For this, the stadium underwent refurbishment, resulting in larger concourses and a new facade.

How to get to the Johan Cruijff ArenA

The Johan Cruijff ArenA is a modern arena located in an office park in the south-east of Amsterdam, approximately 10 kilometers from the city center. The stadium can be reached by train or metro, with the train station Bijlmer ArenA located nearby. The station is close to the stadium and has regular service.

The Metro takes less time and arrives at the same station as well as the Strandvliet/ArenA station that lies on the north side of the stadium. Take Metro 54 from Amsterdam Central Station, or any of the stops in Amsterdam city centre. Metro 50 connects the stadium with southern and western parts of the city (e.g. Amsterdam Zuid station).

Address: ArenA Boulevard 1, 1101 AX Amsterdam

Eat, drink, and sleep near the Johan Cruijff ArenA

The Johan Cruijff ArenA is a part of an entertainment and shopping complex located in a large cinema and two of Holland's principal concert venues. There are also a few places to get some (fast) food or have a drink, though options remain rather limited. Recently, a few new hotels have opened near the Amsterdam Arena. These hotels include a Hampton by Hilton, the futuristically shaped Fletcher Hotel, and the Jaz Hotel. If arriving by car, the road-side and affordable Bastion Deluxe Hotel is a decent option. However, you will need to catch a metro to get to the arena. For an overview of hotels near the Amsterdam Arena, click here.

Of course, most will prefer to stay closer to Amsterdam?s lively city centre.

Ajax Tickets

Tickets for Ajax games can be bought online. If tickets remain available, the Johan Cruijff Arena ticket windows usually also sell them on the day of the match. However, recently Ajax have been selling out well in advance.

You are expected to pay ?25.00 for a seat behind the goal and between ?30.00 and ?50.00 for a seat at one of the sides for a regular match. Prices get increased for the games against Feyenoord and PSV.

The Ajax Club Card is occasionally required to purchase match tickets, but most matches go on general sale. There is a separate ticket portal for foreigners to buy tickets.

Johan Cruijff ArenA Stadium Tours

The Johan Cruijff ArenA offers guided tours that include the press room, mixed zone, VIP areas, and dressing rooms. These tours last about 60 to 75 minutes and are in English or Dutch. Tours run every half hour on weekdays and every 20 minutes on the weekend. You can check the latest schedule here.

The tour costs ?16.95. Bookings are not required, but can be made online.

The official websites of Ajax.nl and the Johan Cruijff ArenA.Iamsterdam.com are both official websites of the Amsterdam Tourist Board. GVB.nl is a website about public transportation in Amsterdam. NS.nl provides information about train times and fares. It is a modern bowl with each side identical. The stadium was built as part of a new out of town development, which stands in a kind of "concrete jungle." Being outside Amsterdam, it feels somewhat cut off from the city. I believe they want to increase the capacity, but this will not improve the architectural character.

The stadium was built as part of a new out-of-town development, part of a kind of hastily-constructed concrete jungle. It feels somewhat cut off from the city, and I believe they want to increase the capacity, but this will not improve the architectural character.

Wojciech wrote on 8 August 2014 at 6:55 pm: One of my favorite stadiums! It stands out as it is very colourful. The tiers are very steep but it is definitely worth a visit. Amsterdam itself is a very friendly city and I would recommend it to everyone.

If you find the Central Station area already seedy at night, I would suggest avoiding Amsterdam altogether. It is a messy area due to the many construction sites (new subway line, car and bicycle tunnels, renewal of the Central station, new bus station) but it is a very safe area and not only because it is heavily patrolled by police and security teams.

There are hotels in the Amsterdam Arena, such as the recently opened and remarkable Fletcher hotel.

Another thing to note is that if you find the Central Station area already shady at night I would suggest avoiding Amsterdam altogether. It sure is a messy area due to the many construction sites (new subway line, car and bicycle tunnels, renewal of the Central station, new bus station) but it is a very safe area and not only because it's heavily patrolled by police and security teams.

The tour did not include many parts of the stadium, less than in most tours. It would have been nice to see the dugouts, players' tunnel, or VIP boxes. And to have the dressing rooms included in the standard tour. The stadium is impressive enough to make it a decent experience, especially if your primary aim is to make photos, however the feeling remains that there is more potential than the current tour offers.

Date visited: 29 October 2011

Our guide explained in considerable detail the history of Ajax and their achievements within European club football. The stadium itself was very impressive and even had a roof that opened up during the match to let the spectators enjoy the atmosphere. Although we experienced a lot of highlights from our tour, there was one moment in particular that we will never forget. After celebrating their victory in the final of the UEFA Europa League against Marseille, our group of enthusiastic fans got to give a hug to both players, including captain Siem de Jong.

The tour began at a noise level suitable for photos by a professional photographer. There was no opportunity to visit the dugouts, and we moved to the press room where our guide held a fake press conference with some of the tour's participants.

We ascended the stadium to view the view from the second tier. Throughout the visit, there was ample time to take photos, and in the second tier some opportunity to explore the stands. The guide provided background information in Dutch and in English.

As the group was quite large, it took a lot of time to move around the stadium. The guide was friendly, but spoke slowly, probably to help facilitate the many non-native English speakers. This added to a feeling of tedium.

A guide perhaps could have provided more background information or added some interesting facts to the tour. The tour included fewer parts of the stadium than in most tours, and it would have been nice to see the dugouts, players' tunnel, or VIP boxes. And dressing rooms should have been included in the standard tour.

The stadium is impressive, making it a decent experience, especially if your primary aim is to make photos. However, the feeling remains that there is more potential than the current tour offers.
